Flushed the coolant yesterday...
Man what a PITA with the pressurized tank and all. I went to O'Reillys to find flush and some good green antifreeze, but didn't have any luck. All they had was the Prestone yellow and orange "extended life" coolants and their house brand green coolant. I took off to Advance Auto and found one bottle of Prestone "for all metals" coolant that appeared green in color on the sticker. Well, I got it home and the **** was clear!!! No mention of compatibility or anything. I took it back and stopped by K-Mart. Finally, I found a few bottles of Peak green stuff for $9.99 a gallon!!! . It says it meets or exceeds all manufacturer specs, but doesn't say anything about the Ford spec listed in my owner's manual. Does anyone know if this stuff is any good?
K-Mart didn't have any distilled water, so I went to the grocery store and got the last 8 bottles. Before driving home I popped the hood and poured in some Valvoline coolant flush. When I got home I let it run for 10 more minutes with the heater on. When it cooled I drained the system down till the reservoir emptied, then topped it off with about a gallon and a half of the water. I closed the pet**** and let her run for 10 more minutes, drained, and repeated the cycle through 7.5 gallons, pumping the upper hose to help stir things up and check for air pockets. (This really cleaned out the reservoir.) I then topped off with two gallons of the Peak and took her for a spin. When I got back I loosened the cap to make sure it didn't need burped (it didn't) and checked the mix with a badass Prestone guage that measures each 1 - 2 degrees. with an arrow instead of the *****. It was dead on so I left it at that. I only had to add about a half cup to top it off.
This took forever, but worked without (hopefully) getting any air bubbles in the system. The reservoir looks like new now. I first had a drain and fill at the dealership at 38,000 mi. and now this flush at 53,000 mi. and the tank looked just as dirty as it did before I had them change it the first time. Much better now.
