Question starter protection??????

do the 97 and up f-150's have starter protection- as in when the engine starts that the starter will quit cranking when u continue to hold it? The other night when i was leaving my girlfriends house, or should i say mourning , I think i held it a little too long as i was starting it while reaching to close the door- i was pretty much 2/3 asleep, LOL. I am not really worried about it as i didnt here any grinding or squeeling and it still cranks right off like new, Just curious.

Dan.

Every starter has an over-run clutch. If you start the engine and it fires and you continue to hold the key in the start position the fywheel will spin the starter gear. The over-run clutch will allow the starter gear to turn at this higher speed without turning the starter motor.
