Ruined my 4.6 today...
For the past year my truck (98 4.6) has had a terrible pinging problem since it had 4 head gaskets and finally a new head on the passenger side. Today on the way home I kicked her down and something finally happened. It started to shudder and lost power. I started removing plug wires and found that cylinder #4 ( the bitch up under the firewall on the passenger side) did not make a difference once disconnected. I took out the plug and it was flattened! there was parts of piston sandwiched in! So now I need a new engine and have the dillema of what to get. If I were to have Ford put a new rebuilt in, can I get one that is of a new design with the PI heads? or would I have to change other things to make it work? What year of block should I be looking for and which plant should it be originally from?
If anyone in Canada reads this, do you have any idea on a cost for this venture?
Thanks for any replies

Looking at your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) the 8th didget will identify your engine build. In the case of your 4.6 it will be either a 6 or a W. Strangely enough the 6 is for a Windsor, Ontario Engine Plant and the W is for Romeo, Michigan. From that info you can search for the right engine. A Scrap Yard engine can run as high as $2000.00 depending on the condition. E-Bay might have something for you. http://www.car-parts.com has a search engine that will check all over North America for you. My used and abused 4.6 is for sale by the guy who bought it from me. His vehicle deal fell through so he has a motor and no car to put it in. Last I checked he was asking $1000.00 for it. He paid me $950.00.
If you are handy with a wrench a long Block would be the safest/cheapest route. If you lived closer to Windsor I could help you pull the old one and install the new one. Kingston is just too far.

EDIT I called Engines Extra

384-8657 and talked to Mark. They want $2800.00 for a 4.6 with a $500.00 core deposit. They do not install but if you ask they most likely could recommend a shop.
