302 to a 390 or a 400

MY truck is a 89 f150 4x4 with a 302. At work there is a 400 with tranny with no pullies or anything adn there is a 390 with everything on it. I want to put one of these in my truck, basically just for fun since its a free motor. I was wanting to know if anything on these three motors are interchangeable. Could I put the 390 parts on the 400? Or use the 400 tranny on the 390 or use my 302 stock tranny on the 390 or the 400?

The 390 and 400 have no relation to one another, so I doubt if there are any motor parts that interchange (tranny's might swap between each other, but I don't know about that).

Since the 390 has everything, I would probably pick that one as a starting point. However, the 400M was offered in an F150 as recently as '85 or '86, so that you might be able to find exhaust manifolds and other motor accessories in a boneyard pretty cheap.

Another possibility is to hold out for a 429 or 460 - I think there is a company that makes a kit for that swap.

Each of these three engines have their own specific bell housing. Whichever one you choose you will have to get the corresponding transmission if it is an automatic, or the corresponding bellhousing for a manual. Another thing to look at is that all of the motors that aren't currently in your truck never came with fuel injection, which is what the 89 has. These were strictly carbureted motors! A swap with one of these would be extensive. Just stick with what you have.

5.0 and 5.8 did come with flue injection, in the 89 f-150 , I'm cururious if you could swap out the Fact. ford flue injection on a 351 and put it on a carburated 400, blocks and heads would be the same ???

Uh, I don't think that the 351 and 400 heads are the same. He|| Ford made two different 351's that were alike in displacement only! LOL I don't see too much of a problem with swapping a carb'd motor into your truck, but you will have to work out some potential issues with the fuel lines and pump.

Yes the 351 widsor and 351 Cleavland were two different engines, two different spark plugs as well, I had a 73 ford with a 400, it basicly was the same engine as a 73 351Cleavland, in the later years a 351-400m is what ford purduced, If a flue injected 351m has the same block and heads as a 400m, I still wounder if the flue injection would fit on the 400M, May be Thermostat housing's, ect might be diferent....Also Ford did make a 351 HO motor for thier trucks, But I think those were Carburated.

To bring you all up to date: The 351 Windsor started production in 1969, same as the 351 Cleveland. The 400, developed in 1971 was based on a 351C motor, BUT had a bigger crank journal diameter, the 429/460 bolt housing pattern, a longer stroke crank and of course different pistons. The 351M came about in 1975. It is basically a 400 with a different crank and pistons. Everything else is the same:heads, block, intake and exhaust manifolds, etc. Ford ceased using either motor in cars in 1979, and 1982 was the last year period, only seeing use in the f-250 & 350's. No Cleveland, 351M or 400 was ever fuel injected, and 99.9% of the 351M/400's were 2 barrels. The 351HO was a smogged down Holley 4 barrel equipped Windsor motor.
