another hesitation/missing question
My 2000 with the 5.4L seems to have a slight hesitaiton or miss from around 1300 to 1800 rpms. It is not as bad as when I had a misfire on #4 or when one of my coil packs totally died. It is just not as quick climbing through those rpms as it used to be. The truck has 109,000 miles on it.
From searching I have seen that others have cleaned the throttle body and the EGR ports to fix a similar problem. I have found great instructions on this site, but is this something that a person with some mechanical ability, but little experience with car engines could handle?
Plugs, fuel filter, PCV valve and wires to COPs changed less than 5,000 miles
ago. While it was at the shop for the plug and wire change I happened to walk in while they were still working on it and noticed they had my K&N air filter out. I checked and they didn't replace it. Should I clean my air filter? I cleaned the MAF within the past 10,000 miles. I wonder if the mechanic was nice enough to clean my filter for me (I doubt it) and the MAF needs to be cleaned again?
The PCV valve is a cheap metal one from AutoZone. Would it make any difference for me to replace it with the Motorcraft PCV?
Do you think just running a bottle of Redline fuel system cleaner would help it?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Went to Advanced Auto today and bought some Redline SI-1 fuel system cleaner. I will see if that helps any at all after I put it in. I think it is dirty injectors because I had a bottle of Valvoline Maxlife injector cleaner that I put in it right after it started hesitating. I didn't have time to make a trip to the store or time to search on here so I used it and it doesn't seem to be hesitating as bad as it was.
I really don't want to just start throwing parts at it because that will get expensive. Does anyone have any idea what could help this problem?
Again, would cleaning the throttle body and EGR ports help this? Do you think someone with some mechanical ability, but with little experience with these engines could clean these without screwing anything up?
Thanks for any help you can give!

Clean your MAF with electrical cleaner and use two bottle of Sea Foam. One can should be used for the intake and the other one poured into your gas tank. I can promise you that it will make your truck run better. If you need instructions for the MAF procedure and Sea Foam, perform a search on this site. There have been a lot of good posts on these topics.
Thanks dmbuie!
I have cleaned the MAF before on my truck so that is not a problem. I have never used Seafoam, but have read a lot about it on this site. I have read other places about Seafoam possibly messing up spark plugs. Is this a possiblity or just someone needing a spark plug change and blaming it on Seafoam? I just had the plugs replaced and don't want to do anything to harm them. Thanks again for the help!
I have used SF at least 4 times with no ill effects. I had my plugs changed at 100K and now my truck has 125K. SF made my truck perform like new, with no more hesitation at all. Try it and you will see.
Thanks again! I will try Seafoam next time right before I change my oil, so that all the carbon doesn't stay in the oil too long and screw something up. This site is the best for getting help with these trucks!
Whenever I first got my truck, it had 90K miles on the odo. At 100K, I replaced the plugs. Since then I have had multiple oil changes (every 3K) and use SF (on the advice of another at this site last year) every two oil changes. The first time that I used SF it helped my hesitation a lot but it was still there. The second time that I used SF, my truck really woke up. The third time that I used it, I ran my engine for about 15 miles, sucked up a can of SF in the intake, let it sit for 1/2 hour and restarted my truck. I also poured a can in my gas tank. You would NOT believe the amount of smoke that came out of the tailpipe! Was I embarrassed? Of course. Was it worth it? Yes! On the same day, I also cleaned my MAF. My hesitation is completely gone now and the truck runs like-new. Good luck.

Sea foam is great stuff, I have used it for years. Done properly it'll turn your yard blue for a lil bit. it's practically a tune up in a bottle. For real I'm not kidding. I've never had Sea foam mess anything up on any of the vehicles I have owned or worked on. I've owned 53 vehicles in 15 years or so.
