royal purple oil
 

im currenly running royal purple 5w-20 in my o2 supercrew. i was wondering if any one else has ran it and what there thoughts were. all seems ok, just looking for some more input. and when do you recomend changing it. some say 10,000 some say 15,000

I have heard that it is a decent oil, but it shears quickly. I wouldnt run it for 10,000 miles based on what I have heard on www.bobistheoilguy.com

For the money there seems to be better choices out there.

I'm using it and I have been very happy with it. I plan on changing my filter every 3,000 - 3,500 miles and change the oil every 8,000 - 8,500 miles.

I have ran it in my 99 5.4 for a couple years now. Its got 120K without any troubles. I change mine every 5 to 7k, sometimes those miles go by before I get a chance. When I started using it, my engine idled smoother and since running it in every thing from the engine, trans, rear, and water pump I regularly get 18-19 mpg and I run this truck hard.

But oil seems to be a touchy subject on here.

Royal Purple is indeed a very high quality synthetic oil. However I saw that your truck is a 2002 model and are using a 5W20 weight on it. If your truck has over, say, 65K miles i suggest moving up to a 5W30. This will provide your engine with greater protection when the engine runs warm. Also, oil's life decreases with increased engine temperatures(Generally city traffic) The best recommended interval for this kind of oil would be in the 6K mile range. Slightly higher for highway use.

im running the 5w20 because i heard that if you go with something different and something goes wrong it would void your warrenty. and i only have 36,000 and have the extended warrenty until 48,000. so im following the book until its up to be on the safe side. 98% of my travel is highway. so i guess i will change it around 8 grand.

If you are sticking with 5w-20 to keep from "voiding" your warranty, why are you willing to run 8k or 10k Intervals when you warranty requires no more than 5k Oil change intervals?

I bet he overlooked that detail, I didn't even think of that when I read it earlier. If you are gonna go by the manual to make sure you have no warranty problems, I would definately change the oil every 5k. Stinking warranties..:smoke:

He never actually said he runs 10k intervals.

If using anything other than 5W20 will void your warranty then my dealer will eat it for sure. Back in the days when I didn't do my own oil changes (no longer since a bad experience at a dealership) the dealer always pumped 10W30 even when I demanded 5W30. Once I even had it put on the service ticket before it goes in and they still put in 10W30. (According to the little reminder sticker they put on your windshield) All the service person could say was "Oh don't worry it won't hurt anything". That wasn't the point idiot.

He doesn't have to, he said he planned around 8k(which is actually a good number, after that, especially if it didnt need topped off at any point, it tends to get thick.) and he also said before that he wanted to go strictly by the manual to have no problems claiming a warranty, so we are just pointing that out and giving suggestions based on that.:banana:

If you were to have any problems on claiming a warranty based on oil, it most likely would be because of how often you changed it(even using synthetic) not weight like LeanNCut was saying. However I really doubt you would have problems either way, if some dumbass dealer said no because of it, take it to another.

I DONT KNOW WHAT AND WHAT WONT VOID IT. IM JUST STATING WHAT I WAS TOLD AT THE DEALERSHIP. I CHANGED BEFORE 3000 WHEN I WAS RUNNING MOBIL. THAT IS WHY I ASKED BECAUSE SYNTHETIC IS NEW TO ME AND I WAS HOPING TO GET FEEDBACK FROM OTHERS WHO HAD USED IT THATS ALL. No problem, if you wish to go by the ford manual it is fine, I believe it recommends 5k. If you don't mind going longer, with mobil or royal, i'd change either at around 8k.:)

Frankly, I don't know why you would use Royal Purple when Mobil 1 is available. Mobil's R&D and experience in virtually every form of driving/racing imaginable just can't be beat; and I think the product proves it. Full Disclosure: I used to work for Mobil in their lubes division -- if you were able to see the teardowns, proprietary information, tests, etc., as I have, you'd think the same way.

Everyone has their own perferences, though, and I'm not trying to go overboard, so apologies if I've offended you -- I didn't intend to. Btw, if you decided to use Mobil 1, depending upon the conditions you drive in, you should have no problem going 15K between changes.
