Question Check Engine Light ????

I have a 98 F150XLT, 4.6L, 2WD with only 46,000miles on it and the CHECK ENGINE light is on. What are some things I may want to look at as the probable cause?
I can't even get an appt for two weeks for them to run a diagnostics test. I live in Germany (military) and F150s are not very common.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If its running ok and you dont notice any driveability issues.
I would order a cheap OBD-II scanner, pull the codes and post them in this forum and do some searches on them. Its super simple to pull the codes from the computer.

There can be loads of things that would throw codes,, from as simple as a loose gas cap to hairy electronics problems.

Actron makes scanners, and you can find them on eba y. Many performance tuners also double as scanners.

I am waiting for someone to tell you to go to Autozone or Advance to get them read for free

Good luck,,, whats the price for gas over there now?

Yeah, Autozone appears to be the norm and they don't have a DeutschZone here, either.
I'll look in to ordering an OBD II scanner.
There doesn't appear to be any performance problems at all.
On the economy and with the current conversion, it costs about $5.00 USD for a gallon of gas.
Thanks for the help.

I'd just take it easy until you can get it scanned and checked out.

RWCII,

Why don't you clear the code. And see if it returns right away! It may be as 864lightning said, could be as simple as a loose fuel cap for the last tank of gas, or a pcm failing to read a few spark pulse's.

As you may or may not know, the pcm codes can be cleared by disconnecting your battery for 5-10 minutes while your headlights are turned on(to drain any held voltage in the system). Remember to remove your key from the ignition while doing this as the inrush of voltage when the battery is reconnected could play havic on the vehicle's key interlock system.
Maybe with a little luck no code will be set again.

Where are you stationed from Baumholder? I spent 2 1/2 years of my life there with the 68th Armor back in the 60's

Good luck! And keep us posted.

Gene

If you noticed my mileage and the year of my truck, you can see that I don't drive it that much. I didn't want to sell it just because I was going to Germany. It was the Deutsch Mark when I first got here and the exchange rate was great.

Gene,

I am going to try to clear the code today with a little luck.

I am with the 1st ID, AVN BDE in Katterbach (Ansbach). I'll be moving to Hohenfels in July for another 3 years and then retire. I've been to Baumholder. It's a pretty nice area, but I am sure it has changed quite a bit since you were here.

It's my understanding that Katterbach has gone through many changes over the years and it is getting ready to go through a massive change along with the rest of the Army. I had a neighbor when I lived at Ft Bragg, NC that was stationed in Katterbach in 1954.

I cleared the CEL yesterday, now I just have to wait and see if it appears again.
