Power Steering...should I be concerned about this noise?

I'll apologize from the start for my excessive paranoia...but I dont know jack about trucks and its my new baby, so Im freakin at every little sound until I know her!

When I have to make a sharp turn, I can definitely hear the p[ower steering...it sounds almost like a whirring sound....or straining...pretty technical description huh!?

I have a full warranty and I'll probably get the whole truck checked out tomorrow for kicks, but anyone have an idea if this is normal?

thanks!

Fords have generally been known for power steering pump noise. My '03 makes a small amount of p/s noise. I'm not sure of the causes, so I don't know any fixes off the top of my head. But plenty Ford owners are riding in the same boat as you. Watch for other replies!

I had the same problem with the my truck (98 F150 XLT, 4.6L) and found the fix on this forum. I did two things and one or both fixed the noise.
1. I took a needle injector and put it on a grease gun and injected grease into the rubber boot on the steering wheel column shaft that goes to the p/s pump. In the engine compartment, not under the dash. After I put the grease in, I put superglue over the hole.
2. I sprayed heavy duty silicone spray where the steering column goes through the fire wall.

The problem went away.

Good luck!

Thanks...I did a search and I havent found anything definitive, but do see a ton of related posts...getting some ideas.

I'm in the process of some hardcore reading on engines, mechanics, etc.....school's in!

Anyone have some specific suggestions?

Get the FORD, CHILTON's Manual. 1997-00 repair manual. I've had one for a while and it has helped quite a bit. This forum has been very helpful as well.

Mine makes a slight noise on left hand turns. I think the pump is just a little weak. Not broken, just weak. It will give out one day and I'll fix it at that point.

And yes, the fluid is clean and full with no leaks.

they all make noise when u turn the wheel all the way to the left or right- mine did it since brand new. I dont think it is anything serious- unless it is really loud
