chittychittybangbang--service engine

My 2000 f150 has run real well until recently. It has 4.2 v6 and on the highway it started cutting out. stalled on the way home a few times and service engine code (courtesy of Autozone says
cam position sensor bad.)

Changed the gas filter (was due) but reluctant to change sensor.
Is this a job with my average mechanical ability be able to handle?? Does anything else besides sensor need to come off??
It looks like there is s tube on top of the water pump in the way of getting at it.
Would you recommend dealer be involved on this one??

Could use a little guidance.. thanks--thunder

The sensor itself can be replaced without removing anything else, but before you buy anything, take the sensor(the black part with the wire and the two 5.5mm bolts holding it on) off and check to see that nothing is torn up inside the synchronizer assy. Sometimes the sensor will break and cause the synchronizer wheel to break also. The sensor is around 50 bucks, but the synchronizer assy is almost 200. Good luck, and any further questions, just ask.
