Fast Idle Adjustment
Fast Idle Adjustment
What's up guys...Looks like this is a pretty nice forum.
I have a 1980 ford f150 4x4 with 351 modified....runs
sweet and just turned 110,000 miles. When start up
cold it idles way high (1800 rpms). The engine has to
warm up for a few miles before I can kick the rpms
down to idle (600 rpms). How do I adjust the fast
idle and where would it be located on the carb ? May
have something else worn that wont allow me to
kick that fast idle off to normal idle after a few minutes
warm up.

Look on the passenger side of the carb. There is an adjustment screw that will come in contact with a "stepped" cam. The bottom of the screw should be opposite the "V" stamped on the cam/linkage. If not, shorten/lenghten the screw to get the desired setting, reactuate the accelerator to set the cam and check it again. I'll take a SWAG and say the screw needs to be turned to the right, as you view the screw from the top, and doing so will bring down the high-idle RPM.
Try the public library; see if they have a Chilton's or Haynes manual.
Good luck.
