Running below 1/4 tank is a good way to fry the fuel pump. The pump relys on gas for cooling a bearing lubrication, when the tank gets that low fuel is being sloshed away from the pump, starving it for fuel. personall i never go below half and it also doesn't hurt the pocket as bad on the fill up.

According to the owners manual 6 gallons are remaining after the light comes on.

6 gallons? Yeah right. Maybe in the '04-'05s?

But on the pre-'04s, its more like 2 or 3 gal. I filled up the other day, the light had just come on, and I put in 23.1 gallons.

And to chucks: filling up at half tank isnt going to help your pocket book...that just means that you fill up more often than if you went to 1/4 tank. Also it might COST you more since gas prices are RISING.

I'm notorious for letting my tank get low. Just a habit. I have an Expy with a 30 gallon tank. When I fill up, I consistently have to put in 26-27 gallons. I have been doing this for the past 5 years, nearly every fill up. I have 115,000 miles on it and my gas pump has not failed. If I would have known it to be an issue, I'd have been filling my tank before it ever gets so low.

When my light comes on, I can only fit 27 gallons in my tank. SO there must only be 3 gallons in reserve.

My wife has a Windstar with a 25 gallon tank. When the light comes on, we can put 8 gallons in it.

I get 13.6 mpg avg. I have drove 62 miles then only could fit 22 gals in it after the light came on. It is not exact every vehicle varies even the same year, model, etc can vary by 3 gallons.

It can also vary, ie, if you are accelerating/decelerating, going uphill/downhill, etc.

In my 99 I drive about 30 miles after the light comes on. when i fill her up it takes 23-24 gallons. Every tank I run it this low and havent had a problem. I fill her up every week, so I try to run for as long as i can. I hate filling up twice in a week.
As far as the pump, It is cooled from the fuel being sucked up, not sloshing fuel. the pump is mounted at the top of the tank.
