Power stroke running rough

I have a 2001 Power Stroke that is behaving badly at about 1/2 throttle. It runs very rough, sputters and seems to want to stall. If I get on the throttle a bit more, it seems to even out. Also the engine light is blinking on occasionally. Any hints as to what this could be.

Thanks, dzalar

My father-in-law has a 2001 Power stroke that he purchased new. At about 30K miles, it died on the highway. He had mentioned the same symptoms as you did just prior to it quitting.

According to my father-in-law, the dealer had to replace something near his fuel tank and if memory serves me correctly, they had to remove the fuel tank to do it. It wasn't the fuel pump, however. Sorry that I can't give you more but hopefully this will lead you into the right direction.

Dmbuie,

Thanks for the response. I'll probably have to take it in then.

You may want to try posting your question on thedieselstop.com...lots of information on PSDs there.

Get your truck scanned for codes.

Thank you all for the advice! I tried replacing the CPS, but no luck. I took it to AutoZone to scan for codes, and no errors were found. I would have taken it to the dealer today, but the tech is out until Monday I would have done the fuel filter last night, but AutoZone didn't have one in stock. I'll probably just wait until Monday.

One thing that can make a diesel run rough is air in the fuel line. One of the mods for the PowerStroke is to replace the line that leads into the fuel pump with a piece of rubber fuel hose. The stock setup has an O-ring that is prone to leaking air into the fuel system. I did this mod when I had my old '00 F-350 and it made a noticable difference in engine performance and fuel economy. Go to The Diesel Stop.com and do a search for "hutch mod". Also, be sure to drain your fuel filter bowl once every 5000 miles to keep any trash and water from collecting in the bottom of it. Also replace the fuel filter every 15,000 miles. Send me a private message if I can help more.
