300 - 6 stutter

hey all, hope you can help..

I have a 1988 f150 2wd with the 300 cu/in 6 and it stutters. I replaced the fuel pump and filter today, and it is still doing it the same thing, with no improvement, if not a worse condition. anywhere that I should look to figure this out?

TIA.

Nick

im staring at a haynes manual, and it says vacuum and junk, maybe ignition issues. wondering if anyone else had something similar and was some sort of fluke thing to look for. thanks.

If you haven't done an ignition tune up lately I would start there with a new rotor, distributor cap, spark plugs, and maybe spark plug wires. Also put a container of sea foam or fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank before you fill up next time.

i havent givien it a tune up since i have owned it, but im sure its due. that was next on my list. now about sea foam where can i buy that? i have never seen it before. i dont really believe in fuel injector cleaner too much, seems more gimick that reality.. which do you prefer?

88 ford? wasn't that one of the years of the self-imploding cats? Maybe the cat is getting too restrictive? Just a thought, I had a 89 GT that sputtered and ran like crap, until I put an off road h-pipe on, then it ran great....... I think one of the 4 cats was clogged up.....

same deal

Do the tune up as you suspect and run some seafoam through your gas and engine. If there are still problems and you are having hesitation you may look to your torque convertor. Mine was doing pretty much the same thing but bogging down and hesitating when i accelerated at any rate from a stop and it ended up being torque converter problems and dirty injectors.

Well after a new cap, rotor, plugs and wires, still same ole stutter..

Issue with the cats? makes sense sorta, ill cut the B*tch out for all I care. To test this, can i disconnect the "lower a pipe" from the cat ?

As for the TC. i have a 5 spd. i just replaced the clutch, slave cyl, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and carrier bearing. along with a resurface of the FW. so that isnt the issue, i guess i should have spec'd that in the first place..

i have a rusty old tank, that needs replacing (tomorrow). could it be a clogged fuel pickup?

Thanks again fellas for the help. Im gonna try the cat thing tomorrow while i got the thing in stands.

i priced out a new tank and a new sender. about $300

so i looked for a newer truck with a bad motor but good body. and found a 1992. f150 custom for $400. so i mean i look at it like this.. but a gas tank, get a free truck

Sounds like a good deal. I had a rusty tank in my Mustang, and I had it lined with some purple stuff, they use it alot on old bike tanks, it took care of the problem, and only cost me 60 bucks.
