My 97 did that and I hooked up my neighbors battery charger for a few mintures and it started okay.
I went straight to the parts store and bought a battery.
Since then I have my own battery charger also.

Check and clean the cable connections on the starter and battery. there have been a few post here saying the cables also go bad and will give you these problems. Try connecting the jumper cables directly to the starter.
If you use the search feature you will get a little more info.

If the battery is good, tested good. The connections are tight and clean. If you jump solenoid and still only get a "Click". Check to see if you have power the the cable connection on the starter.
If you have power, the battery is strong [ie known good] and everything is tight. You need a starter.
Try wacking the starter, on the side, with a hammer. That will jar it many times and it will start.

I had the "click only" symptom on my 94 F150 (6 cylinder). The starter is only 1 1/2 years old (was replaced at the tranny shop after they couldn't start when finished working on my tranny). I wouldn't have thought it was already bad as I don't drive the truck very often. After checking/cleaning all connections with no luck I pulled the starter off and manually tried to start using my battery charger. The first time it just clicked. I pulled the ground off and tried again, this time it turned over fine. I took it to the parts store to have tested. It did the same thing for them (wouldn't turn over the first time). The guy who tested it pointed out that it was pretty noisy and suspected the bushings were going out. I bought a new one (lifetime warranty this time) and it fired up the first time. I posted this for those who may have a newer starter with the click symptom.
