Starter cutting out
Starter cutting out
I just recently bought a 1998 F-150 a couple of days ago. Didnt get a warranty with it. Today I went to start it, and it just went (zeeeee) it finally did start after a couple of times. I was wondering if anyone know if it is The Starter, Starter Solenoid(on firewall), or the Starter Solenoid on the Starter? or Even if there is a way to check which one it is that has the problem?
Any Help would be great. Also, is there any way to check what an engine code is, or do you have to use the little tool thing. I know on older vehicles there was a key-on-off thing you could do, and the lights on the dash would flash the number of the codes, to tell you what was wrong.
Thanks

if the starter just spins and does not engage the flywheel ...then i'm afraid its the starter..its the starter bendix(drive)actually...in the old days you could buy just the bendix...but nowadayzzzz i'm not sure...zap!
For a 98, you have to use an OBD-II scanner to pull codes from the PCM. No other way.
Simple scanners start at about $35 on ebay. A decent one will run you $125-150 from your neighborhood autoparts store.
You can pick one up while you're at the store buying your new starter notor.

aotozone lists a starter repair kit for 25 but doesn't say what is included. If you have a alt/starter shop in town check with them for a bendix. the last one I had replaced they put the new bendix in for less than i could buy it for. I took the starte to them of course. starters I'm sure are 125 at least. good luck
