Unhappy another stupid oil question

ok i kno we have beat the oil questions to death but i searched and searched and have not found an answer yet. i have a 2000 f-150 5.4 v-8. works great love the truck but its been bugging me everyone is talking their f-150 is 5w 20 and how great it is for all years and yawda yawda. well point being my manual and the clymer manual both say 5w-30 for my year truck! from what i hear i would rather be using the 5w-20 well make that 0w-20 since i use mobile 1 syn. i have been using 5w-30 mobile 1 since 2002 but now its always out of order at the shop too many people are buying it for jap crap. they do have 0w-20 tho and i bought that this time. havent drove it yet after the oil change but is this going to hurt the truck any?? it says 5w-30 but can i go to 5w-20 (0w20)? i do live in northern mn where winters get to be -30 and colder in the winter months so is it too thin or anything? and why did ford have some 30 weight and some 20 weight? any help guys?

IMO, as cold your weather gets up there, I think a 0W or 5W would be great. You need to have an oil that is thin enough to get to those critical parts at cold start-up.

racer, you are ok with 0w-20.

First, there is only a slight difference between 5w-30 and 5-20. The 5-20 is about as close to a 5w-30 as you can get and still call it a 5w-20.

Second, the specs for a 0w-20 are tougher to meet than for a 5w-20, so the 0w-20 will already meet the specs for a 5w-20. Mobil designed the 0w-20 for 5w-20 applications and that is stated on the bottle.

When Ford changed their recomendation for the 5w-20 they also changed it for back models which were previously running 5w-30. The 5w-20 gets slightly better gas milage, so slight that you could not measure it in your single truck. The formulation for 5w-20 is improved over that of the 5w-30, and the new formulation is living up to expectations in Used Oil Analysis. You're good to go.

The engine in your 2000 is the same one others have in their 2003.

Oil question

Racerman, for what it's worth, I live in Winnipeg, which is another 100 miles north of Minnesota, and I use 0w30 synthetic blend, for the low viscosity easier starts I get and for the higher viscosity highway protection on the longer runs. Hasn't been too bad this winter, as the really cold temps only lasted briefly, and we haven't had the big snows. You guys got them all.

He is right! Ford has spec 5W/20 for all modular F150 engines back to 1997. I was told this was because the 5W/20 helps prevent upper valvetain wear.

Ford Motor Company, which already recommends 5W-20 motor oil in most of its 2001 and later models, has expanded that recommendation to most 1996-2001 models. Ford Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 01-4-7 updates TSB 99-8-16, which recommended 5W-30 motor oil in most Ford vehicles.

Ford now recommends SAE 5W-20 motor oil in the following engines/vehicles:

Well since my 4.2 is on the list I guess next week I'll be going from 5w-30 to 5w-20.
