Dear My89f-150,,, for around $350 you can purchace a engine overhaul kit from NAPA Auto Parts and rebuild it yourself, if u can get someone to help you clean and scrape gaskets at the same time ur taking it apart and assembeling it, u can have it completed in one day. If the engine is smokiing or buring oil, maybe the "Bon Ami", or the "Dawn Dishwashing Liquid" fix might work. I would try that first.
I think to "rebuild" the engine is going to take longer then one day.
If you're doing it yourself you'll have to check for cylinder wall taper and bore size to see how much of an overbore you're going to have to have done.
Usually .030 over will do.
Then check the crank for wear and out of roundness. To see how much the crank should be turned.
Most .010 undersize will clean them up.
Then measure ring gap, bearing clearance, chase all the threaded holes, etc.
To really "rebuild" an engine is not just throwing a "kit" in it and hoping that's all.
To purchase a rebuilt engine I'd check around with Jasper, Ford and other regional engine rebuilders. You probably have some rebuilders located in your area that are worth checking on too.
If you're going to "do it yourself" get a auto machine shop envolved and someone that knows what they are doing, so you don't just waste $$$. I've seen it done....oh too many times.

Dear Gearhead99 Most engines the bore and the crank is ok, they don't need any machining, all you need to do is replace the rings, and the rod and main bearings and seals and gaskets. Remember the old 2.9 V6 they had in the Ford Ranger? Me and a friend installed a rebuilt kit in that in one day, and thats removing and installing the engine too, what takes most of the work and time is cleaning the parts and scraping off the gaskets, what speeds that up is a good wire wheel mounted on a good grinder, that takes the gaskets off nice and clean.

99 is correct this is not a one day job.
Maybe you can work a chevy in a day but it will only last a week!

Mr My89f150 didn't give much information why his 302 engine needed rebuilt, maybe the old "Bon Ami" or the Dawn Dishwashing Liquid trick might solve his problem, and he wouldn't need it rebuilt. He needs to do a compression test and a cyl leak down test just to see what his trouble is. Why spend a lot of money rebuilding an engine when a simple repair that all used car dealers do? The Bon Ami trick scours the cyl walls so the rings seat, and the Dawn Dishwashing Liquid cures the problem of the rings sticking to the pistons. It works, I have seen it done, Used Car Dealers do that all the time. Maybe one of you guys bought ur truck used and that was done to ur engine, and its working good.
Not to get into a flame war here. But, if most engines that are rebuilt don't need the bores done or the crank done, then why are we rebuilding them.
The bores wear in a taper wide to narrow as you go down the cylinder bore. The scraping of the rings, which are usually much harder then the cast iron block, wear the bore.
The crank takes a bounding on two planes, causing the journals to go egg shape. And if the engine had any oil or dirt issues it will surely show up in the bearings that will transfer to the micro finish of the journal. This clearance, along with the cam bearings, is what controls your oil pressure. If the clearance is too large then the pressure is always down.
Anyway, if installing a set of rings and bearings works for you. I'm glad for you and wish you well.
Take care,

maybe the quote you got was a short block 5.0 but it was not a triton.I have found thier prices high and their warrantys questionable.I had machine shop build me a motor and the guy used to run cranks for jasper.I ask him if the rumor about differnt
size sleeves in the bore was correct he said yes he said also for a while the bore would change dramaticly from 1-8.He did say they had improved since then but he would not purchase a motor from them to much money.
FYI!
find a used 5.0 explorer for under $800 and be done with it. I got one for my buddys mustang, and with a cam and intake change it is making 310hp to the wheels. and has been in the car for 2 years with no problem. reving to 6000 every day.
