Another MPG post

Hello guys! I found this site a few weeks ago I like what I have read so far very informative. I have a question about my gas milage I bought a new 2005 f-150 supercrew a few weeks ago with the new 5.4L I apsolutly love this truck but the gas mileage is terreble I am getting 13.2 mpg overall 50/50 hwy/city driving. My question is it possible that my factory setting is way rich. when I first start the truck rolling it seems like a small miss like I am running on 6 or 7 cyln then after 2nd gear its ok also when the truck is at idle it seems to be a little rough. Is anyone else having the same problems. Sorry if my 1st post is a little long. thanks. Brian

Your mpg isn't bad. I can't help you with your small miss though. Take the truck to the dealer and have them look at it. That is what you have a warranty for. I'm sure if you were having a miss, the computer would have tripped a code. These computers are sensitive to anything out of specific ranges.

thanks triton motors. I will take it in to the dealer to see if something is wrong To be honest I hope they do find something and it gives me better gas mileage. this truck is 2wd I picked this over the 4wd because I thought I would get better MPG sticker said 14city 19hwy I was thinking I would get around 17MPG.

once summer rolls around it should pick up a little bit on the MPG.

But the fact you are doing some city driving is going to knock your MPG down as well...these trucks are heavy.

I had a '76 Ford F-100 4wd (360V8) a few years back that got between 11-13MPG. So, when I traded it in for a '95 Ford F-150 4wd (302V8) I thought besides having all the "nice things" my old truck didn't have, that it would get better fuel economy. WRONG, It consistently got 10MPG. I did everything in the world I could think of to "fix" my fuel issue. Finally after hearing from others and talking to mechanics who had a history with these trucks, I found out there wasn't anything to "fix".

Moral of the story: It can always be worse than it is and don't spend to much money trying to fix something that isn't broken. These trucks don't get really good fuel mileage.

This time I got the 4.6L I get an average of 15.4MPG. That is city/interstate driving mileage combined. I have seen as good as 20.3 on the interstate, and as poor as 13.0 in the city. Yours sounds about right.

Good Luck, and I hope you actually find something wrong.

Give it several more weeks to learn your driving style.
I bought used and it took all of 30 days to learn. In the mean time I thought I made a mistake buying the truck.
Today is runs very strong with reasonable mileage for being winter time at 15+ for milage.
It's a super crew with 4.6L 4x4.
I have already got 17.1 last fall so it will get better as the weather warms up.
There are no mods to the truck.
The misfire detection is very good and if you have a real fault it will detect it.
Sometimes a condition arises that detection is done over several driving cycles and may not set a code if a fault is not there long enough for a software desision to be made.
Good luck and give it a little more time.
If your dealer tells you there are no codes set, they can't do anything for you in most cases.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the response fellas. I did get 16.2 last weekend on a trip to Tenneesee @70+ I also did not mention that I use my truck for work and I have a ladder rack on during the week at 13.2 mpg The drag is probebly causing some loss of mileage. my last F-150 was a 1998 with a 4.6 and pulling a 14' enclosed trailor I got a whopping 10 to 12 mpg this 5.4 engine is a lot stronger I cant wait to pull the trailor with the new engine and hopefully along with the better pulling power my MPG will improve also :thumbsup
