Squeal - squeak at cold startup
OK, I wanted to post this so future persons with this issue can find it in a search.
With a "97 F150 SC with 5.4 at 98K:
I had a 1-2 second squeal at engine startup that was not related to the belt/pulleys as many are. Below freezing the noise was quite objectionable. I traced the issue to the starter. The bushing in the starter gear is wearing and leaving some deposits on its shaft, causing a squeal when spinning. After cleaning and oiling as best I could, the noise is now gone.
I may be back in later as this "fix" may not last long, but I wanted to verify the problem. Pulling the starter is not as bad as it looks - the top bolt takes a little finesse to get on/reinstall.
