There are many things that can trigger the light. Any one of the sensors, a loose or worn out gas cap, a misfire from a bad plug or wire. Have the tech check the codes, and make sure he tells you what code(s) he retrieved. Bring them back here and post them. Not the fastest method of repair, but at least you'll get a fair shot at an honest repair job.

You can also take it to certain auto stores, like "Autozone" in my area, they will pull the code for free! This way you don't have to pay to get the code, and you might be able to fix for yourself. Ive got a 2001 and ive had the Check Engine light flip 2 times in a couple months, luckily im still under warranty, both times I couldn't feel a difference in the vehicle drivability, but ended up being fairly big jobs. Hope this helps!

You can take it to an autoparts store and have them pull down the codes for you (normally free of charge). For the cost of paying someone to do it, you can buy a generic code reader from Harbor Freight on-line for $40 and do it yourself.

My check engine light has come on twice with my 97 F-150, and both times it was running fine. The first time was a factory spark plug blew, the second was code 401 low EGR flow.
