My engine has a ticking, comes from the fuel injectors.

I have a 2001 Expy 4.6. It too has the ticking. It's caused by the ball inside the PCV valve moving up and down at idle speed. The tick is most prevalent if you have a metal PCV valve instead of the plastic ones supplied by the factory. To prove this, temporarily remove the PCV valve and plug the holes. Try it and see. Once convinced, reinstall the PCV valve.

Yes it has a piston slap noise at idle. I can hear it best while waiting in line at a drive up window. I have 110,000 miles and it has done this since new. It does not use or burn any oil. It is a characteristic of Ford, Chevy and Dodge. Apparently nothing adverse about it.

I have two noisy injectors on my 4.6. I first noticed it right after installing the supercharger. I was freaked out. Checked all over with an auto stethescope and located the two noisy injectors. Everything else sounded fine.

Might want to see if you can get your hands on an auto stethescope.

If you determine it is the injectors making the noise, replacing them should stop the noise. I would guess that the new ones could make noise at some time in the future too.

The injectors in my truck have been making the noise for at least two years with out effecting proper operation of the engine. I would like to, and plan on replacing all of the injectors but they haven't been high on the "budgetary" list. They can be pricey, especially if you are upgradeing to a higher flow.

Has nobody else experienced the spitting spark plug? You need to park your truck immediatly and check thed spark plug torque on every hole.

I had a 97 5.4L in a 1 ton van. It made a tick-tick-tick through the rpm range and at various throttle positions. I kept wondering "what IS that". I knew it would eventually let me know and whoa nelly did it ever.

It finally spit that spark plug, after it had hammered away the aluminum threads. The repair cost was enormous. In fact, I had to make the tooling and do it myself, as nobody else had the interest to attempt it.

Redo your search, this time using a "spit spark plug triton" elements, and you'll be shocked at what you find.

BTW I have two more veh.s with 5.4L triton motors. Best motor ever built IMHO.

Good point! I haven't had this happen but I have seen several posts about it. Especially in the Lightning section. I don't know how many trucks have had this happen. I'd say it's a good idea to check the plugs.

I believe that Ford did eventually address this problem by adding more threads. You'll have to do that search and see what others know but I think that an '02 might have the additional threads to hold the plugs in.
