New guy here, quick question.

So my mom tells me this morning that her truck's service engine light came on. I checked it out, and noticed her battery terminals were REALLY corroded. I cleaned them up, and it went off. So I ran some seafoam through the brake booster line, and told her to take it for a drive. She came back and said the light had come back on. Am I gonna have to take it to Ford to let them run a test to pull the codes? Or isn't there a handheld diagnostic computer I can buy at like Autozone that will do the trick for me?

first, go re-set the computer. Disconnect the negative terminal, and turn the headlights on, let sit for 20 mins. Turn off headlights, re-connect neg. terminal, and crank. Let idle for 5 mins or so, then take for a normal test drive. Let the computer re-learn the settings. If you still have the CEL, then go to Autozone, they should be able to read it for free.

The reason the light went off is because when you disconnected the battery terminals, you erased the Keep Alive Memory of the pcm. After this, it will take two drive cycles to turn the light back on, or at least two start ups, if it is a hard fault. Have the code read after the light returns and post the code, and you will receive a lot more info into the problem. Good luck.

Schucks also does Diagnostic Checks, with a nice print out of the code, symptoms, etc. and they will loan out the code reader as well. At least here in Oregon. Good Luck

Ok so she took it to Autozone and they pulled the codes. They told her it was the EGR valve. Now I'm pretty familiar with the EGR on my mustang, but I'm not to familiar with it on her truck. Does anybody have any pics and/or a how-to on replacing it?

I got around to replacing the EGR valve, but the light came back on. She took it to Autozone again, and they said that the EGR valve sensor needs replaced too. I haven't been able to look at it again, and I don't remember seeing where this was when I did the EGR valve, can somebody tell me if there is anything special involved in this? Or just swap the old for the new?

What code did they pull? Its in the form of P****

It could be the DPFE sensor...relatively cheap, easy to replace yourself.
