What is your average MPG?

Well, since i dont see a way to make a poll on this board, i guess ill juse leave it to posts

Everyone fess up, what is your average MPG... as well as how you drive that gives you that MPG.

Example: Mine, i drive the speed limit (usually) and i dont hit the gas all too hard at any time... just when passing on the freeway from time to time... i do a little "between cities" freeway driving, no more than a mile or two, and only a couple of times a day maximum... and my average is about 14 to 15 miles per gallon, and that would be the best ive seen...

approx. 350 miles to the tank (give or take) divided by 25 gallons in tank = 14 MPG... average of 2 MPG per 50 miles

(99 4.6 supercab) almost always can count on 15ish. Live near a small town, mostly stop and go and some hwy trips. Tend to get on it to hear the exhaust. Best has been 19. Average 2 mile drop when it gets cold due to warm up, cold temp, and 4x4. Like i said...it must by my hood scoops that give me that good mileage

I believe trytokeepup, this past summer I was seeing upper 18's and 19 mpg real regular. Hit 20 mpg once right after I had changed oil and filled her up and had a business trip the next day with a slight wind at my back. Mostly highway miles .......can't stress enough that driving 55 is the way to go. I have found that this '04 is very sensative to excessive speed, and especially the wind, rain and snow.

I keep a log of my mileage and will willingly share it, to anyone.

I swear by amsoil, along with premium oil filter as well. It costs me $40 bucks to change oil but I more than make up the difference in mpg. Good oil pays for itself.

Since weather has hit, mileage is very depressing with longer warm up times, more 4x4, ice and snow. When it was -20 last week was high 13's to mid to high 14. Has warmed up a bit now and pushing 15 +.

I have the 5.4 ltr and let the lariat package figure the mpg. I have checked the computer on the dash and has yet to be wrong.

13mpg is usually what I get. I dont worry anymore, I just fill up when needed. I drove to Indy (560 miles) in the summer at 80mph and got 13mpg. coming home I set the cruise at 65 or 70 and got 16 mpg.

4.2L 5spd. 17.5MPG, in town or at 70MPH. I drive like grandma, light throttle, light brakes, ease up to cruise. I can get over 18 if I drive on 55MPH roads for long stretches. I get get down to 16 if I get on it.

that seems about right, I can usually expect low to mid 16's at that speed depending upon the weather. Do you have the 5.4 or 4.6?

Overall I guess I am happy with my mpg, I was getting 16 mpg on average with my '01 ford 4.6 ltr and 15 mpg with my '88 ford and that didn't matter if I was going uphill or down, with or against the wind, and way better than my '68 dodge which boasted a whopping 8-10 mpg. The dodge was the same age as my wife......don't ask me which one runs better!

about 14 is my average, subtract about 1.5-2 (12.x) MPG in the winter.

In the summer I usually get around 330 miles to a tank, winter it varies from tank to tank (kinda like the weather here), but about 300 or less seems to be the norm for me.

I try to drive with a light foot, but I tend to get on it sometimes and I dont go faster than 5-10 over the speed limit (on highways I usually drive 70-75). ANd since I moved down here I do a litte of every kind of driving, city and highway. If it was all highway I think I would get around 14.5 to 15 MPG.

racer,

you can have the -54, -20 was no treat and Alexandria where I work was a balmy -15. I hated to even go out and start the truck as it has had to sit outside until my remodeling project is complete. I use 2wd most of the time, only use 4x4 when I beat the snow plow out door or have to take county roads to get to where I am going.

How much extra weight do you throw in the back and do you have any great ideas, I had to resort to the 60# bags of sand in a tube but really don't like them as they tend to slide around to much for my liking when you get snow or ice in the bed. I did see one guy use a slab of 1/4 " steel that was 4'w x 6'l, that looked kinda handy.....otherwise I always used to use an old inner tube that I cut in half then clamped the ends shut with lath and some 1/4 bolts after filling with some dry sand. works well, as you can take some sand out if needed and then close it back up. However, getting harder to find inner tubes here in town and my old set finally cracked open from years in the sun.

Keep warm!! Spring is coming!!

Why do i feel like a jackass? There is no possible way you can be getting 19MPG.... the calculations are just staggering..... in order to get 19MPG you would have to be getting 475 miles to the tank.... for christs sake even accords only get 20 miles to the gallon!!!! and those are V6 hondas! im getting 350... in a truck with no mechanical malfunctions, driving in above 40 degree weather, sometimes slightly lower, in a 4.6L auto, and i never really get on the gas.... i may cruise at 70 or 75, but never 80+, and never even 55MPH on a street... i just dont get it... i can see a 2 or even 3MPG difference between trucks of the same structure... but you guys are claiming 19MPH in 5.4s..... unless your calculations are off, i dont see that happening... but oh well, guess we will never know.. wish i could have seen 19MPG even with my V6 camaro lol and it was a 2001! Can anyone verify that this would be possible/impossible? im really concerned about my gas mileage if a frickin gas guzzlin 5.4L can get a WHOPPING 19 MILES PER GALLON and my lil 4.6L is sittin in the crap box with 12-14 in basic conditions....

Edited to add: You guys ARE aware that your tanks only hold 25 gallons..... correct?

While my experience with Ford trucks is limited (until I can plunk down some money on a new F-150) I have had a lot of different vehicles from new (between my wife and myself). On each vehicle I owned I was easily able to beat the EPA estimates *except* on my 3 VWs. I got 19 mpg easily and as high as 21 on a 2001 Nissan Xterra 4x4/auto. I also got as high as 29 mpg in a Jeep Cherokee 4x4 I6 during a long trip. For some reason I think the EPA tested the VWs differently because I'm lucky to ever meet the highway figure except on my TDI (easily gets 48 mpg at 75 mph).

Anyway this is a long answer to say I think it's quite possible for some of the posters to get what seems impossible mileage out of a tank of fuel.

...of course it's also possible they are either crazy or lying but I like to assume the best of people until they prove otherwise

1Bad97f150,

NO Lie, I am getting 19 mpg in the summer if I keep my foot out of the throttle. Easy on the throttle, easy on the brake, ease up to and away from stop signs. 55mph is the way to go....as I stated above that if I drive faster than 54-56 mph then I do see a reduction in gas mileage, also a newer engine is a factor as everything is tight and minimal wear. Better compression, I also stress premium parts and lubricants and keeping a fresh coat of wax also helps a little.

Just ran out to the truck and got my owners manual and the '04 with a 6.5' box has a 26 gallon tank plus i fill to the top of the neck. I also make it a point to use the motorcraft brand of fuel line and injector cleaner on a regular basis. Don't waste your money on the stuff at the discount store spend the $ 10 and see the difference in your mpg.

I am not trying to be a smart a** but here is the math, sometimes when we see the significant figures it affects our throttle habits.

26 gallon Tank
x 19 MPG
__________
= 494 miles/tank

Believe me no one is more excited to see summer than myself and racer150man.

Also if you have to drive in the rain, I usually hug the centerline when possible or the fogline, if you drive where you normally do the natural wear paths of the road hold the rain water and you end up driving in deeper water.....doesn't seem like it would make a difference but watch you rpm's that will tell the whole story. Less gas usage means more money in your pocket and I am sure your gas is more expensive than it is here in Minnesota.

filling to the top of the neck is bad.... very bad lol excess pressure and whatnot... heard it can be fatal...

but anyways, yea i didnt know you had brand new trucks.... while mine is a 97 with 50k, its still an older design, and since EPA is usually wrong with their judgements... (to my knowledge, i have rarely seen a car get the mileage they claim) i guess im getting good mileage at 14 when i baby it... well... damn... guess i got a bigger gas hog than my nova...
