Read the fine print VERY CAREFULLY! Most of these aftermarket warranty companies SUCK - they are just out to make a quick buck, and will exclude most everthing possible, saying crap like your aftermarket intake caused your heater core to go out. I know, I got suckered into buying one with my wife's Taurus - Luckily, my mother (worked for Ford Credit and knew the transaction details) found out and called the dealership up and chewed them out for trying to sell me that crap. After she told me about it, I sat down and read the fine print - and came to the conclusion that the warranty was not worth the paper it was printed on. [\rant off]
That being said, I'm sure there are reputable companies out there, but they are few and far between.
My $.02

It has been my experience that they are not worth it.
And if they tell you that you can get money back when you trade or sell it, you will be amazed how they will prorate the thing.
Put your money in the bank to pay for repairs, you will be better off.

Here is how extended warranties work, they have to make money for the company, ...well I guess that's how everything works.
A big warranty company with a lot of customers and income can actually afford to do a few repairs and still turn a decent profit.
Smaller warranty companies must find a way to deny coverage on as much as possible because they have less capital to work with in the first place because of fewer customers. They will do this by scrutnizing your claim or hiding escape clauses in the fine print upfront. They are basically selling 'peace of mind' to you. Everyone is happy unless a major claim surfaces.
As for tiny companies like me well, I bascially will deny everything because you would be my only customer and if I can't even make $499, I might as well get out of the business.
