Ford Dealer answer (or lack of) to 5w20 oil

Ford dealer stated to use 5w20 oil eventhough my 00 supercab owners manual states 5w30. I asked him why the change and no amendment to the owners manual and he couldn't answer either question.

I've been using 5w30 for 108,000 miles since new with no problems. Why change to 5w20?

Thanks,

Jeff

The reason Ford changed is because they could get about 1/2 mile per gallon, or something rediculously close, increase in mileage due to the thinner oil consuming less power to rotate the engine. Just stick to the 5w30, you'll be fine. There are two factors that dictate vehicle design and functionality: Fuel mileage and emission standards. Once these are met, the rest is cosmetic.

See this post for the text of the relevent TSB regarding 5W20 oil: https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...light=TSB+5W20

It is likely that the dealer person you spoke with simply was not aware of the history of the change.

Owner's manuals are not amended and sent to owners....
