Help Overfilled OIL

I had the oil changed in my 2000 F150 6 cy. at a oil changing / car wash place 2 week ago. As soon as I started the truck when leaving the lube center I notice it was vibrating. I ask what they did they said change oil and put in a air filter. A week later I took it to a Ford Dealership and they put it on a diagnostic machine, could not find anything wrong, they told me that the vibration was caused by the motor mounts. I told them not to change them, they charged me $80.00 for that service. Today out of a hunch I decided to check the oil and guess what, it had 12 quarts in it! I called the oil place they said that if I brought it by with the ticket from the ford dealers they would reimburse me for the 80 bucks. I don't know if any harm has been done, it does not smoke or leak oil. As soon as I drained out the 6 qt. it ran smooth. Oh one more thing the place I got the oil changed it 60 miles away.

What should I do.

12 qts? Is it even possible to put that much oil in these engines??

That could cause some damage...I would have it checked out and be sure if there is any damage the car wash place pays for it.

I can tell you that it is very possible and not only that it will run. I have put around 200 miles on 12 qt of oil. What they did was dial in 6 qt, that guy walked away and someone else dial in 6 qt. They never checked the dip stick!

Thumbs down

I would say DON'T take it back to that place again. If their mechanics are not smart enough to check the dipstick after putting oil in, they are not smart enough to be called mechanics.

My 2 cents.

I've seen this qustion on other boards. There are two problems to watch for that can cause damage to your engine.

With the crank case over filled excessive oil pressure can break seals resulting in them leaking. Check your engine for any oil leaks. If you find any it likely resulted from being over filled.

When the oil level is high enough to reach the crank the excessive splashing will result in air bubles in the oil. If that is the case you will see tiny air bubles on the dip stick. The problem with air bubles is the lack of oil where the air is resulting in reduced lubrication, plus air compresses. That can be a problem in areas where you count on the oil to support two engine parts from contacting each other. If you have air bubbles in your oil change it out with fresh oil and it will be fine.

This happened to my brother once. They didnt drain the old oil and put the new oil in on top of the old. I would suggest changing your oil yourself or watching the oil change places like a hawk. Most of the time you are not getting what you pay for anyways. Fortunately my brother was watching, and with a little arguement from the smartazz manager they drained all 10 qts of oil before starting the engine. He got 2 free oil changes.

I just wanted to say....they're idiots. The extra effort it takes to do a job yourself is worth it because you at least know the job is done correctly.

When I have my oil changed I bring the lube shop a case of synthetic. Exactly 6 quarts.

Have them put the empty cans back in the box and the box in the truck for you to throw away.

Mail or fax them a copy of the receipt. When they pay you for your dealer visit, they are admitting to screwing up. If any damage has occured and shows up later, you have evidence that they admitted to screwing up.
