1990 shift on the fly?

I have a 1990 F150 with a 5.0L I picked up a few weeks ago. The previous owner said you have to be in neutral to shift into 4H. Is that true? It's a shift on the floor. There is no owner's manual (I'll never understand why people take them out of the vehicles).

My girlfriends got an '82 Bronco w/ auto hubs and it shifts on-the-fly. I've never engaged it going more than a few miles per hour, but it doesn't have to be in neutral. (Unless your goung to 4 Lo).

My mechanic said he had the exact same truck, and if your hubs are locked, you can shift on the fly. So, I tried it this morning whilte I went out to plow and it works.
