Another bad coil pack...
Another bad coil pack...
... but no "Service Engine" light yet.
I have a 2001 5.4, and another coil pack is going out. But the light hasn't come on. Can a code still be pulled, or do I have to wait for the light? Is there any other way to find out which cylinder is affected?
P.S. I've already replaced #6 and #8, so I'm suspecting either 5 or 7.

My 99 F150 5.4 has had the number 3 coil go out on 4 times now.... Luckily two of those times it was under warranty...
Anybody have any ideas what might be causing the same coil to burn out?
The other 7 have made it over 100k without any problems...

Yep
Yes the code can be pulled without the check engine light coming on. When my truck, a 2001 F150 5.4 4x4, has lost a coil pack, its lost two so far, the check engine light has never come on. I went to advance auto parts and used their code reader. So far I lost the #3 and #6 coil packs. This last one I changed in the parking lot of Advance in about 15 minutes. Remember if you do it yourself, take it back to your auto parts store and have them clear the code off of the computer.

i have a 99 lightning i've had to replace the coil pack #4 3times finally i went to ford to see why was i having that problem it ended up being my intake leaking it was a recall on intake for 99 so they upgraded to 01 intake i haven't had that problem anymore
If the problem isn't severe or persistant, the "light" won't come on but you might still have a "pending code". Most scanners can also read pending codes. I've had coils starting to go bad that never triggered a code and yet the misfire which usually occured while under load, such as going uphill at slow speeds was annoying!! After all the other things such as plugs, fuel filter etc. have been ruled out. I resort to the "professional method" LOL, get a coil and keep swapping them around until I find which one was bad.
? for speed12
speed12, was the recall on all 99's or just the lighting model ive had the same problem with mine #4 3 times any info would be great

My 2001 NEVER threw a code or a CEL light after several hundred miles with a bad COP.
It was bucking like a Wild Bronco it was so bad at times, but never did throw the code.
Ironically, when I had a bad DPFE, It threw a code and a light, and it was running perfectly.
