Freeze Plug Woes on 1992 Flareside 4.9 I6

Found my freeze plug between the two exhaust manifolds, just above the motor mount leaking. Replaced it (oh what fun) and the new one is leaking. I would rather not put a rubber one in as there is very little space behind the plug. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to put a metal plug back in that hole? There is no room for a hammer, nor any way to get in there except through the fender near the shock tower. The problem is that you are on an angle and cannot hit it straight on. The one that I put in there last night is leaking around the outside which tells me that I obviously warped it or damaged it. Any tool suggestions?

They make a tool just for this. The new plug fits perfectly into the driver. The driver is angled so that you can hit it that way and still get it in. You most likely can get one from Autozone, they loan tools out. Makes the job alot easier.

Good luck

Thanks, I'll ask when I pick up the new plug.

Don't count on the local auto parts stores carrying a freeze plug installation tool (aka expansion plug tool). Half never heard of such a tool and the other did not. I tried AutoZone, Pep Boys, NAPA, O'reilly. The only place I found the tool was online. Replaced the plug using a 1 1/8 , half inch drive socket attached to a long extention with a 3/8 drive extention pushed inside of the hole on the 1/2 inch drive extention (to get an angle, could not get to directly). Hope this takes care of it. Imagine $50 to replace a .50 part
