EGR SENSOR Problem,, dfpe to be replaced by Ford?
EGR SENSOR Problem,, dfpe to be replaced by Ford?
2001 Triton V8 4.6L
Extended cab.
Guys.. i have a code being read that is saying INSUFFICIENT Flow EGR.........
OKAY.. now.. so I took off the EGR valve yesterday, cleaned it all out.. (not really dirty) and made sure the diaphram and everything was not busted....
Okay,, so now i have it down to a bad DFPE sensor or dirty throttle body.
about the DFPE sensor... my truck DOES NOT have the silver 3" by 5" (approx) sensor located next to the EGR Valve its self.... im guessing it is the "new" one that is black, plastic, and 1" X 2" installed into the line comming off the EGR valve, and it is close to the firewall of the drivers side with 2 vacumm hoses comming off the bottom of it.
here is a picture of my truck...
Is this "new" kind one that has been replaced?... I bought the truck used with 35,000 miles on it, and now it has 62,000 miles on it...
BUT HERES THE KICKER.. you guys say that the sensor that has two lines comming off of it and connects to the line after the EGR controls the EGR valve... BUT ACTUALLY... THE SENSOR that is to the left of the yellow box that looks has a round cap on the top of it is what goes to the EGR Valve...........
Can anyone give me some information....

My girlfriends ford explorer sportrac is going through the exact same situation. It has been narrowed down to the EGR vacuum solenoid next to the EGR valve, I wasted 60 bucks on a new EGR valve. Oh well, live and learn.
yea. bro.The vacum selenoid is the one to the left of the egr valve and its what is CONTROLLING the egr right?
Have a vacumm line that comes off the bottom of it to the egr valve itself right?..
how much was the egr vacumm selenoid?

went thru that whole thing this past weekend on my 98 4.6 that has 73,000 miles. It's amazing how much better your truck will run after this

The little round capped sensor (left of the yellow box), has 2 wires running off the bottom on it, one is green, one is white.
The green one is mounted on top and appears to be the EGR vaccum line, it runs up and mounts to the top of the EGR valve.
The white one mounts below it and connects into a bundle of wires in one of the plastic caseings, and runs down along the drivers side valve cover (not sure where it goes from there)
I also have some little silver sensor mounted on the right side of the yellow box right next to the EGR valve, but im not sure what it is. I didnt mess with either of them this weekend when doing my throttle body/EGR cleaning.
Hope this helps.

well i have some answers for ya bro.. the line that is the egr vacuum selenoid (to the left of the yellow box in the picture) has one vacum line that runs (from my truck) from the passenger side of the engine to it,, then one line out to the top of the egr valce.. ie EGR valve control...
The "little silver thing" has one line that runs to it ,, i believe it is a vacuum system for the fuel railing.
UPDATE: I WENT OUT AND PULLED THE BATTERY OFF FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES.. and NOW THE "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" is cleared.... drove it for about 20 minutes.. and its still not on...
hopefully .. cleaning the EGR valve did something... but it really wasnt that dirty... and it didnt have any hangups in the diaphram spring.....
lets keep our fingers crossed.. cause by God ,, if it comes back,, YOU ALL WILL PAY.. MUHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAAAA......
(sorry.. just kidding)

wcluttrell - you were asking about hte DPFE. On my '98 4.6, my DPFE is located within the yellow box in the picture.
The easy way to find yours is to look at the tube that connects the EGR valve to the exhaust manifold. That tube should have 2 rubber hoses that connnect to it. Follow those two hoses and it will lead you to the DPFE.
This is what the plastic DPFE looks like.

O.K.
First off the silver looking sensor to the right of the yellow box is the IAC (Idle Air Control)
Have you done the most common fix/problem on all 4.6's with Insufficient EGR flow? I haven't noticed it mentioned in your posts. What I am talking about is the EGR ports inside the TB.
Everyone always goes for the EGR valve and DPFE because they are easy. It is rarely the EGR valve itself and I believe on your year truck it is rarely the DPFE.
Do a search on EGR ports.

ted,, thats SIMILAR to what my black plastic one looks like.. its a little thicker I think, but yes.. it has two hoses that run out of it and into the line after the EGR valve .....
Well. i got the code and light to clear.. but first,, before i go and clean the entire throttle body.. im going to remove the IAC and see if there is alot of carbon build up on it. .and if there is.. or the check engine light comes back, ill clean the throttle bodies..
its new years eve almost and I want to have some money to go out and have a good time.. a reaaaaaaaally good time..

The picture is of the intake elbow. That shot is the bottom of the elbow where it bolts to the manifold.
The egr valve bolts to the elbow and the exhaust gases travel thru a tube and out thru those two holes.
Did that make sense?
