Do you have a check engine light on??

How many miles??

Could be a dirty/bad Idle speed motor.

Question Mine does that too.

Only when it gets below @ 20 F on a cold start up. I have to hold my foot on it a little for 30 to 60 seconds. Then it idles fine. After the initial cold start up it is good for hours untill it really cools off. What is it that causes this? I have a 98 4.6 F-150

same problem here

I have the same problem with my 1997 4.6L If I just start it the RPM goes to about 800-1000 and then it just cuts out. I did this 3-4 times this morning and then I had to put my foot on the gas for about 3-5 seconds and keep the rpm between 1500-1800. After those few seconds it was good and idled for 10 minutes, while I got ready to leave. I did have the check engine light on for a while but then I put in fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank, and its been off since. When I first got my truck back in July it was used with 93,000 miles on it. I was getting about 15.8 mpg. Now I am only getting about 12. Some of this must be due to the cold weather, and extra weight from the sand bags. Even if i don't let it idle long before I drive I was still getting low gas millage. Where are the O2 sensors located? I think I might try changing those. Does anyone have a picture that shows where they are? I am also going to have someone I know take a look at it and get it up on a lift. If anyone finds out anything please post back as I will do the same. Thanks.

It certainly sounds like an IAC problem. You can remove them and clean them with intake cleaner and reinstall.

I have the same exact problem with my truck here in Maine (97 F-150 4.6 106,000 miles). It has been frigid up here and my truck won't idle on a cold morning. I have to keep on the gas for a few seconds. After that it is fine for the day. I am also looking for help.

I had the same problem on amy 2000 Expy 4.6. Went to Auto Zone 54.00 and change, IAC. It took all of 5min to put on. I saved and cleaned the old one for next time.

It was in the teens with a wind chill of single digets.

It does dip down in single digets in the winter. Biggest problem is wind chill.

Yes it sloved the problem. The cold weather is why I bought one. I hate cold weather and did not want to stay out too long. Hope this helps.

how dirty was your IAC when you pulled it off? I took mine off and it didn't seem that bad. Today when I started it, it was about 30 degres out and the rmp didn't even get to 500 before the engine died down.
