I went to get my oil changed and when I got home I looked at the reciept and noticed they put in 10w30 and not 5w20! What will this do? Should I make them change it or go to my next oil change in 3k?

 

wrong oil, you will be o.k but watch the oil consistancy .
a 5/w oil is cut or thinned to be 5/w and that is done with
detergents and thinning agents so it will be thinner at start
up, your top end #is for breakdown at what heat level

I'm so sick of oil change places just assuming it takes 10/30. All they have to do is LOOK at their screen, and it shows everything they should need to know. The same goes for lubing. I constantly have to point out that there's more than the two factory lube points now, after the front end rebuild. Common sense would tell them to look closer, but still they never do.,,,,98

 

Bring it back! 5w20 Is Required for the best fuel effiecency, as well as warranty coverage. They screwed up, WHAT can they possibly say? You'll be getting a free engine flush, basically!

 

I'm betting that they don't HAVE 5W-20. But wouldn't you think they'd at least put in 5W-30? I know they have that.

 

I would have them remove it and put the correct oil in especially considering where you live. The Tritons need oil quick to the valve train and this is one of the reasons for the 5w- spec in the recommended oil. The 10w- that they put in is going to be slow in getting there by comparison. Valve train wear will be accelerated. You could also have an oil starvation problem in extreme cold as the oil will be on top of the engine rather than quickly running back to the pan to be recycled. It's not the recommended oil for your engine and I would think that you would want to the correct oil in the engine. Its kinda like having somebody topping off the fuel tank with diesel- it ain't right.

 

Don't worry about it. Make sure the right stuff is put in next time.

All companies are set with a oil manufacturer ,and from that
a lube shop uses whats in their" line up"if you want a certain brand and even weight you need to check the company "menu"
before having them drain your car.Every franchise of shops
is being shopped to use a leading oil for their company, and that is the same for for manufacturers and dealers ,so on with filters
and weights of oil YOU have to use, the Moss Magnuson warranty act protects consumers from void of warranty for performance
of products on our cars,you may get hit by some dealers but if you know your rights you can win. Case in point ---if we as consumers had to use only OEM everthing the economy would sure slow up ,and the manufacturer would thenhave to supply
us with only their products in the store and give os free maint with the purchase of the car,dont go ,,,,,a dealer after you buy
the car will not always put in the same oem oil either ,look at the posters and banners in most dealers,they are recomending a lesser priced oil all the time,because it is the company the makes the oil and puts the OEM name on the bottle and marks it up.

Take it back and get it changed. Considering where you live and it's winter, you don't want that thick of an oil in your engine. If it was summer, I might let it slide.

 

Some lube & oil places will actually ask you what type of oil you will want, but if they are not asking you'd better be doing the telling! It is never a guarantee that these locally owned "Mom & Pop" shops will already know what your engine takes, so cover your a#$. If you have the know-how and want to save yourself some money, try doing it yourself. The Wal-Mart stores in my area sell the Motorcraft 5W-20 for $1.42 per qt as well as the Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter (if your engine calls for that) for about $2.50.

In your case I'd be demanding they put the right oil in your engine. Good Luck.
