Tune up

i come from the old-school that when you say "tune-up", you get to change spark plugs, clean carburators, change contact points, condensers, even going to the extent of changing oils and filters, etc.

but in our computer-controlled trucks, what do you do? change plugs? sensors? follow the maintenance manual? what does the dealership do when you have them do the regular every-5000mile maintenance?

thanks in advance for your response!

Well Chris welcome to the modern world of automotive.
A look at the owners manuel will give a pretty good idea of what there is to do.
Mostly at 3 to 5000 mile intervals change the oil and filter, keep a check on the air filter.
Then at extended intervals change the trans fluid and filter, change the rear fluid and front if 4 wheel drive etc.
At about 60k upward the plugs could be changed.
Aside from the other items that could fail like alternator, battery, cooling system, EGR etc. there is not much more to to.
There is no adjustment of ignition timing.
In the future, maintainence you can do will get even less because you won't be able to handle the faults that develope.
The computers are changing now as a new protocall has been mandated called
C.A.N., that all compaines must use by 2008.
Ford has started to use it in the F250/350 line already.
I'm sure I know where your coming from. Already this is hurting the people that have to upgrade to newer trucks and face a dealer bills for repairs that start to get out of the relm of afforability and sensability.
It is becoming more and more a captive market for the dealers.
Think of what it is like to buy used from a private owner and inherit problems.
An example to see is an all electronic dash display. It has a computer micro proccesor that does a lot of functions.
The dealer will tell the customer the whole thing has to be replaced; why, because the dealer is not equipped nor does he want to for repair of these unit down to that level, so it is not alway the dealer's fault to have to do service in that manner. They have no choice.
Well you get the point i'm sure.
Happy holidays.
