Help Major Hesitation!!
Help Major Hesitation!!
I recently purchased a 2001 Screw 5.4 4x4.Auto. I have noticed a severe hesitation at part throttle. It doesn't seem to make any difference in engine temp. When I pull out from a stop sign and get in the throttle. It feels like you have just shut the key off. To say it hesitates, really doesn't describe it. Then in just a split second, she comes on so strong she will put you back in the seat. I will admit I am from the old school. So alot of this electronic stuff is new to me. My line of thought is that this might be a dirty MAF sensor, plugged fuel filter, or a Closed Loop/ Open Loop transistion problem. This truck has 83,000 miles. I bought it from our local Ford Dealership and was told that It was a one owner and had been service at the dealership. Evidence lends itself to that being an accurate statment. I was wanting to "soup" this truck up a little and was thinking on the lines of a programer, K&N air filter and possible a Cat-back system. This may not be the best way, this is the way my "old school" mind thinks. I am open to suggestions and hope you guys can help me out. I need to get this hesitation thing beat. I think that it is unsafe to drive like this. Also will a programmer help with transmission stuff also. I'm not looking for a lot of ponies, but would like to get around 350. Please help..
It's Ford's Granny Tranny.
Step one is to lock out the overdrive (gotta do it every time you start the truck, no easy fix to disable it permanently). These trucks drop; into overdrive if you take your foot off the gas and you're rolling over 25 mph. Then when you touch the gas again, it takes time for the overdrive to unlock and allow the tranny to downshift. By that time you're pushing the pedal harder trying to get some reaction and then it downshifts twice real hard and revs like crazy. Totally unacceptable. But locking out the overdrive helps a bunch.
If you want more help, buy a tuner like the Predator so you can slightly increase shift pressures and firm up the shift a little more. There are a dozen other reasons to buy the tuner and this is but one benefit. Lots of info on tuners here.
