Angry Pulling Spark Plug Boots

is there an easier way to pull the spark plug boots on my 4.6??
It took me 1/2 an hour to pull the first one! (along with a few scrapes on my knuckles)

They make pliers to grab the plug boot. When installing use dieletric grease.

Twist the boot so it frees the boot from the plug.

Pain in the A$$, aren't they?

The pliers thing may work for the easily accessible ones, but ain't worth a damn on most of them.

The dialectric grease is the way to go, but that don't help much before you get the grease on, do it?

It's hard to get enough "grip" or leverage on them, especially the back ones to pull them off. If replacing the wires, I grab the wire right at the point where it joins the boot. That way you get the gripi you need to yank them out. The risk you take is pulling the wire out of the boot or damaging the intergrity of the wire. But, what ya gonna do?

Good luck!

I used the long needle nose plyers with 45 deg bend and wd 40 the back right one. Pull straight up as best you can and with back and forth or circle motion. Before and after pulling the boots I used a small vacuum to suck up the trash so it won't find it way into the combustion chambers.

I know how it feels to be tugging on a boot for all your worth, just knowing that something is going to give and you are going to be f%^&%^!

It took me a month to get all of mine - 97 4.6 - I tried hot engine, cold engine, etc

FInally focused on twisting to break the seal - that finally seemed to to it - and yes there is a gallon of dialectic grease in each one now !

To get the rear engine spark plug boots off of my 4.6l - I used 12" pry bar- I didn't have long tongs.

It worked great- "popped" right out after an hour or so of trying to pull by hand.
