penziol 10-30?????
penziol 10-30?????
is penziol a very good oil? i have ran i in most of everything i owned. also fram filters. are they good. i have heard that running full synthetic 10-30 is also good in summer time for max protection... is this true? . should i run 5-20 in it at all times? thanks
You will probably hear lots of flaming posts on Fram filters, but in my experience they actually filter better and keep my oil cleaner than other filters. With a Fram oil filter PH8A, my oil will start to turn brown after about 4K miles. When I change it at 5K miles, I can still see through the oil on the dipstick. I have tried other filters such as Purolator and my oil will be completely black after about 3K miles. Once they plug up and the bypass opens up, then it's just like not having a filter and the oil gets black. With Fram my oil stays cleaner longer and therefore I feel like my engine is protected better.
Any national brand oil on the market today is 10X better than anything available 15 years ago. There is not really any 'bad' oil available any more. Our old preconceptions from two decades ago that told us 'thicker oil is better' really aren't accurate any more. I grew up running GTX 20W-50 in my big block 360 as well as my old Plymouth Valiant slant 6. Today's engines aren't the same and neither is the oil. I don't think you can put a bad oil in your truck as long as you use the specified weight. I'm running 5W-20 in my 5.4 and I've never put 5W-20 in a vehicle before this one. My '94 Ranger still gets 10W-40.
This is strictly my own opinion garnered from 25 years of owning and maintaining my own vehicles as well as family members. And we all know about opinions- we all have one and most of them stink!

Also I would run synthetic year round. It gets quite cold in indiana and the start up protection of a synthetic would be good.
Most on the shelf synthetics today use primarily Group III basestocks, which are not as good as Group IV or V. But the Group III will outperform all conventional motor oils on the market.
Here's a good resource for all things oil:

Bob has actually done various filter tests (and oil, too), so you can see what their results are.
Some Frams are good, but filters from all manufacturers vary - some are good, while another line from the same company may be not-so-good.
I stick with K&N and Mobil 1 filters, two of the better filters, they say. According to Bob's data, the K&N flows a little more, filters slightly less. The Mobil 1 filters a bit better, but flows a bit less.
