Engine swap? 4.2 to 5.4
Engine swap? 4.2 to 5.4
Ok guys, I have a 1997 F150 2wd with the manual tranny and 4.2 L six banger. I have a 5.4L triton from a 2001 SCrew just lying around. Also, did I say the six has 280,000 miles on it. The 5.4L has 50k miles. Is an engine swap doable here? Will the tranny bolt up, wiring harness match, etc.? Or, will it be too much of a hassle? Thanks
Personally I'd think it a whole lotta work. If you had time to lay BOTH vehicles up for a long time, and swap everything. (and I personally wouldn't have a clue what ALL would have to be swapped, and I work on them every day).
Anyway, I think it'd be an awful, awful lotta work. And even then, messing around with 'this doens't fit, that doesn't work, etc, etc, alone would turn me off the project.
If I was building a hotrod/racecar, that'd be a whole different story. But for building a daily driver?..............nope.
My .002
(and best bet for swap parts etc, is to call a junkyard to see what will fit from what to what).........
Again, personally speaking, I've seen too much stuff/parts/wiring on SAME/SAME vehicles BE totally different just from vehicles built 6 months from each other to even contemplate seeing what would work off a V6 application to a V8.

The tranny will not bolt up to the 5.4. Different bolt patterns. You will need the PCM and engine harness from a V8. Now here is the kicker. The Engine harness for the 5.4 only comes with an automatic so you will have to do some jury rigging to make it run a manual tranny. Your driveshaft length will most likely have to be adjusted to the new power train. It can be done with a little work. I swapped my 4.6 for a 5.4 a few weeks ago. So the big things you will need is a tranny, PCM, engine harness, 1998 4.6 8 bolt flywheel and clutch. Have a look at http://www.car-part.com
