Explorer lacks power on highway

Friend has a 1994 Explorer XLT with 3.2L V6. 135K miles.
He says that it lacks power on the highway, but only when the ambient temp is cold/cool . It also has a loud knocking sound. He says he first noticed it last winter, but it went away when summer came. Now that it's getting cool again, it's back. He can only get to about 50-55 mph out of it. The engine sounds great when not under a load, and it idles fine.

It's a 4.0 L V-6. Only one available on 1st generation Exploders.

Those engines were noted for intake manifold gasket leaks. I'd investigate there first for the knocking.

As for the power, I'd suggest cleaning the MAF sensor as a start. Plugged cats or a restricted exhaust also come to mind.

I'd also suggest running the EEC-IV quick test (both KOEO and KOER) to see if the PCM can self-identify any faults. This can be done with a paperclip.

Cool in AM, (59*F) lacks power and knocks. Warm in afternoon(78*F) and it runs fine. He didn't have time to check the codes but seems like a temp sensor.

Possibly the IAT....

Running the codes may give important clues for diagnosis....
