Question Old Engine Sound on a 2001?

I just purchased a 2001 F150 XLT, and it is a beautiful truck, but the engine just doesn't sound right. The sound somewhat resembles a deisel engine. Its actually kind of annoying i want a clean rumble sound. Its a sixer and has almost 70k miles so i know that has something to do with it. Do i need a rebuild? The sound isnt too loud when idling, it gets more bothersome while pushing the gas pedal. I am not a mechanic by any means so if you have any suggestions please type like a 10 year old child.
Feel Free to email me if you have a chance

you'll never get that "old school" sound from a fuel injected vehicle. notice that the good sounding trucks have carberators. this is what you need, so go buy something made before 88.

Diesel==deisel

The FI does a much better job distributing the fuel. Which makes the engine much smoother and quieter.

We have progress.

First off if it is that loud why did you buy it? Or are you just being ultra sesative since you now have a big payment?

Have you checked all of the usual suspects? Oil level for instance?

What brand of oil filter is on the truck?

Lift the hood and listen closely and see/hear if you can determine if it is an engine noise or an auxiliary noise. (IE: Serpantine belt, tensioner bearing, alternator bearing, etc)

The more info you can give us the more we can help.

Good luck-

It doesnt Sound Like any belts, and its not an awful noise, just something that i would like to clean up on the way to beautifying my baby. The sounds coming from the bottom left side of engine compartment (if standing in front facing truck). Just a very light tick tick tick, when idleing but a little louder when pressing the gas pedal. I will end up climbing under the truck to see exactly the general area as to where the noise is coming from as soon as it stops raining here. Oil Level is good, brand new penzoil filter so thats not the problem.

If it is a light (constant) ticking sound that is soft at idle and gets louder the harder you push on the gas (and faster), then it sounds like a leaking exhaust manifold. You may have some bolts that have backed off a little or a bad exhaust manifold gasket.

Hope this helps

Cut the guy some slack. He said hes not a mechanic, and it sounds like he is just asking for a little advice/help. Not everyone knows everyting.

(First off if it is that loud why did you buy it? Or are you just being ultra sesative since you now have a big payment?) Like myself, not everyone can afford(or want) to buy somethin brand new and in perfect condition. And it still sounds like he appreciates his new truck and he wants to make it better. Just like I do with mine. Also, it sounds like someone else is being "ultra sensitive" to this guys post.

Brett

What does the oil filter brand have to do with a noise under the hood? (But I'm no mechanic either)

Alright Brett settle down. If you would have read my entire post/answer you would have seen that I did try to help him. And my statement about "why did you buy it?" is about helping him. So as a newbie here I would suggest that you step back a little before you jump. Plus he replied and fully understood what I was saying because he read my entire reply.

No harm/flame intended.

The reason I asked about the oil filter is that these trucks are very sensitive to cheap/Fram oil filters because they have inferior anti-drainback valves which in turn let oil pressure bleed down and cause knock at start up. He answered me and said he is using a pennzoil filter which I am now going to answer and say that a Pennzoil filter is a cheapie and he should change to a Motorcraft (which is made by puralator)

However, according to his response to my first statement he said the noise is more like a ticking and a bad oil filter causes more of a knock.

Since it is a ticking my guess would be loud injectors that you may not be used to. They change frequency with changes of RPM's. Also the PCV valve can "Tick" rather loudly.

Is it all good now Brett?

Oh and one more thing,

A tick that changes with RPM in a 5.4 that sort of sounds like a slight exhaust leak could be a loose plug about to launch!

Do a search here on "blown spark plug"

Good luck-

Thanks for the help guys, and now that you mention it, it does sound like a leaky exhaust manifold. Ill get that looked at and also check on the sparkies. The Dealership said that they did full maintenance on the vehicle when i bought it, but you cant really ever trust dealerships. Exhaust was kind of what i was thinking it was, im going to go out and check it right now to see if thats where the noise is coming from thanks for the help!
