engine swap 302 - 351w
engine swap 302 - 351w
I read back about 10 pages at all the threads that generally applied to this. Very useful information. I appreciate it. I think there are a few things about my application that i wanted to get cleared up before i purchased the motor
currently have an 88 f150 302 5.0 5spd 4x4 (its shot ) i found someone with two motors ..
1. 302 5.0 out of a merc marquie wagon with an auto trans
2. 351w 5.8 out of a 88 f250 2wd with a c6 behind it
what should i replace on the motor "before" i put it in the bay ?
situation - i have to do the swap by myself within 16 days and have it running good enough for a 1,500 mile trip towing a small trailer
i would rather the 351w so id have both types of motors to play with and the extra power would be nice. i was told it will bolt right in to my 5spd trans all i would need are a few things
1. new 5.8 flywheel
2. new pilot bushing
3. the 5.8 original ecu
4. the exhaust system off the 5.8
are their any other parts ill need for the swap ?
from what i gathered the maf on the 5.8 will work as long as i keep the 5.8 ecu on it and install that on my f150
there was one other transfer that had to be done i believe was the egr? whats with that?
Ive never done a swap before but im pretty good with engines. i need feedback asap as im checkin out the engine tomorrow and maybe start this weekend.
if theres anything i missed or incorrect or any pointers it would be much appreciated
btw: the f250 was hit in the front.. the rad is busted and maybe the water pump? can i just swap the rad from my 302 to the 351?
this is a long shot, but if theres anyone that has a step by step "how to" on an engine swap with everything that needs to be done.. i would forever be in debt !! sorry for such a long post.. but this is crunch time.. im in need of help!

I performed a carbureted 302 3-speed to 351-auto swap in a 72 F100. Besides the obvious of getting the correct flywheel, it was a strait forward swap with no surprises. Of course I didn't have to worry about an ECU but it was the same motor mounts and radiator w/ hoses. I cut the y pipe exhaust and had a true duel system installed after the weekend swap. With the ecu you are going to have a few more issues, I would look at a performance ecu/ignition system that for the 351 fuel injected setup instead of a used stock ecu with ad hoc wiring. I would also have a contingency plan for a rental if you experience problems.
Problems I encountered after the swap were a few showstoppers with the "built" 351. I had the 351 balanced and blueprinted and performed many of the tricks available in the early 80's to get the engine to pump out 375 hp. Less than a week after the install the main shaft sheared in the transmission - fixed with HiPo Doug Nash 4 speed. Needed new driveshaft for new trans. About 2 weeks later I stripped the ring gear in the rear - fixed that with 9-inch 4.11 Detroit Locker that had the "clunk" and chirp when you took a corner. I then had to go to a stickier tire because of the constant chirping when shifting.
It was a screamer - It would top out at 116 at 1/4 mile.

thanks for the info.. im checkin out the motor tomorrow
any info such as links and what to look for on the new performance ecu ... ?
as long as its good enough to make the trip, i dont really care.. down there i have a garage, some help, and not so strapped for cash... its just right now that i have a MAJOR dilemma..
so your thoughts... everything i said, but look into a different ecu ?
thanks
btw.. im headed to savannah on the 16th..just thought id mention since youre in Atl.. haha .
