My first post is seeking help:
I have the straight 6. What happens is the truck will either not start (just turn over and over...) or cut out when driving. It takes maybe another start or 10min or 2 hours to come back. It's been at a reputable service shop for 3 weeks. These guys run it every day with sensors attached. It's not the thin film ignition module. They think its a distributor sensor that lets the computer know thr truck is running so all relays and fuel pump etc can be energised.
I'm picking it up today, unfixed, after them having it for 3 weeks.
Has anybody had this occur. Does it sound like this distributor sensor? I'm told the distributor itself will have to be changed.
All replies welcome.

it does sound like it could be the dist itself. i had a 86 that was hrad to start from the day i bought it. a few yrs later i was changing the motor and went to start it and it just rolled over well come to find out it was the pickup coil in the dist. put a new one in and it ran better than it ever did. might not be it but its something the comp wont see. worth a try.
The repair shop was interested in he distributor for the sensor. Is this what you mean? its' supposed to pick up pulses and tell the computer.

That's the pick-up coil. Originally posted by mikeonbike1962

my first reply this morning got lost opn a click...
The shop determined that none of the systems wer powered during the time of failure (fuel, spark etc). They said the sensor in the distributor (pickup coil) must be functional for the computer module to fire off everything else.
The truck has toothache at the dentist office.
I may just replace the distributor myself... Hoping its that and not the computer.
Thanks for the replies.

Put a pick up in it.
Heres how it went:
Went to take my boys to the store on saturday morning - won't start. Called Discount Auto for a distributor - $88. Picked up and installed distributor. runs (so far) great. The pickup coil in the distributor could probably be replaced ( I think it was $16 ) but I think that requires removing the distributors lower gear ( garanteed destruction I understand ). If the truck runs well for say 5 days. I call fixed. Thanks.
