engine info and tips
I am going to change the motor out in my 89 F150 and was wondering how hard or expensive it is to change it from a 4.9 to a 5.0. Would the tranny and trasfercase interchange, how about the motor mounts,rear-end. Any paper work or info anyone has on these things I would really appreciate or would I be better off just putting a 4.9 back in it. hope to get some good info back.
Without knowing of you abilities doing these things, the problems may overwhelm you in the end just because of lack of knowing what your getting into.
The computers are completely different making the 4.6 wiring un-useable.
The exhaust is different for demensions.
Are you going to use a two pipe fuel system or a single pipe?
Mass Air or Speed Density engine control?
The trans is electric control by the computer; what system will you use?
It certainly can be done given enough work and cost but my guess is you should not try this unless you have some knowlege of fuel injection and the various systems from 96 up that are used with the 5L and aode trans combinations and use a donor truck with all the parts that are needed.
If you live in an area that has emmission inspection then you will run afoul just in that situation alone.
From 97 up, the OBDII system is used and will make life tough unless all of a stock system is installed and problems worked out.
Better to replace the 4.9 with a rebuilt, with a warrenty and no other self generated problems and get the truck back useful again.
This is just my position on the matter, having done a lot of these kinds of things over the years.
As always, I close this type of reply with a saying that you have to become the expert on your work because shops may never want anything to do with a change such as this if you should have a problem you can't workout.

It has the 4.9 (300 straight six) and it is a 5 speed man tranny not sure on the transfercase or rear-end but I will look into it and post it later. I have swapped a v-6 2.9 in a chevy berreta to another berreta and 350 from a 79 blazer to a 87 chevy truck I didnt run into that many problems but those were same engine size swaps in a nut shell the exhaust and wiring should not be that much different so I think I will go with the 302 to get the added horsepower.

It is not a bad swap if you have planned everything out. It is not like a direct swap as there are numerous brackets and wiring changes that will need to occur. You will need to swap the engine mounts to go with 302 (among other things). If you have the towing package you may be OK with your radiator. You will need the 302 flywheel/clutch pack and you may need a different bell housing for the transmission (this is also a good time to go through the old trans to make sure it will handle the added power). The exhaust will need to re-run (headers are not that much more on a swap like this).
This will not be a weekend project. You will run into problems that will take a little head scratching and time to figure out. For the effort you are going to be putting into this you may want to consider a 351 or larger power plant.
Good Luck!

If you're doing this for horsepower, don't waste your time with a 302. IMO, the 300 is a much better engine than the 302 anyway (at least as far as truck engines go). If you really want a V8, get a 351. Both will be a fair amount of work and expense, but the 351 will give you what you want. The 302 will **** you off. If it were me, I'd get another 300.
