Rough Idle
Rough Idle
Hi Guys,
Quick question for you. I noticed this past week on two days (not consecutive either) that when I went to start my truck it started but it had a rough idle.
By this I mean it started however the RPM's dropped really low, the engine and truck shook a bit (thought it was going to stall but it did not) but eventually after a few seconds (maybe 5-10 dunno) it zoomed up to normal revs then idled down as normal.
I guess my question is, what do you think it could be?
I have a 2003 Supercrew with the 5.4
22,000 miles or so.
K&N Drop in Air Filter
Custom Superchips 9100
I should also note that the K&N was not extremely dirty, but I dont have someone else's dirty filter to compare to. The MAF "appeared" to be clean.
Also, it has been a bit cooler her in PA lately, upper 40-50's or so when I go to start it up.
Thanks in advance,
Jag

I assume that your K&N filter is the "Oiled" type and that you have not cleaned or applyed oil to it recently.
I would suspect the IAC valve first (Idle air control) but with such low mileage I would also suspect a vacuum leak.

First off I would clean the K&N and make sure not to over oil it. Next you should clean off you MAF sensor. Also here is a good read on ruff idle problems.

That’s really not new – idle shake is inherent in ALL 5.4’s and V10’s (which are just a 5.4 V8 with 2 more cylinders), it’s not limited just to the 2004’s. It’s just more noticeable in the newer trucks (say, the last 3 model years) thanks in no small part to the silly-low idle speeds being used – like just 560 rpm, for example. Personally, I don’t like an in-gear idle speed below 625 rpm in the 5.4’s, but it's not just an idle speed issue, nor would I just crank up idle speed for a "cure." To some extent, this idle shake appears on al the modular motors.
The standard Superchips tuners are not a “cure” for that, though many people have in fact posted that they have noticed improved idle quality even with the “standard” Superchips tuning.
Now in our *custom* tunes, there are a couple of things we do specifically to address that concern that generally result in a smoother idle in virtually all the modular motors – but I’d never make any iron-clad guarantee that we’re going to magically or completely “cure” all idle shake.
This section has literally hundreds upon hundreds of posts from other vehicle owners who have posted about the improved idle quality with our tuning, so there’s certainly plenty of track record there – just don’t expect an iron-clad guarantee to magically “cure” all idle shake, etc. We can usually make it better in our custom tunes, give us a call for any questions on this.

Yes it is the oiled type. I am actually taking it to the dealer tomorrow for some other warranty work. I think I will mention this to them as well.
How does one clean the MAF? Also any pics or instructions on this would be sweet.
Thanks and Regards,
Jag
