Kind of off topic.. Chemical spray question

I just bought a stairmaster, and the guy I bought it from tried to spray paint the handles on it black(moron).. The handles are already black, I guess he wanted them shiny. Problem is, the material is a soft type of rubber and now the handles are stickier than all hell.

I've tried soap and warm water and it doesn't remove it... it feels like a paint that just hasn't and won't dry.

What do you guys reccomend to put on here to remove the sticky feeling? Feels like a kid whiped a lollipop all over it the handles.. If I threw chicken feathers at it's they'd stick... I won't hold anyone responsible if their reccomendation makes the whole handle melt away.

use denatured alcohol instead of acetone (Old painters trick) it will remove the paint but not harm the surface like acetone will.

hand cleaner is also very good at this. just don't use any water.

worst case you can wrap the handles tightly with good quality electricians tape and be done with it. just make sure to wrap them very tight by slightly stretching the tape as you wrap the handle.

If you can't get it off with above ideas or electric motor cleaner or spray silicone then cut them off and replace them with water pipe insulation from the hardware store. You know that black foam type stuff like roll bar padding.
