I Got a 97 F150 with a 4.6.

It was missing really bad on the way to KC about 90 mile trip, but on the way back it didn't miss a lick just seemed like it had no power. Still had oringnal plugs in it and it has 137,000 miles on it so I thought it was due. HA HA

During the disgustting 4 hour spark plugs and wire changing I noticed there was oil sitting down inside #5 spark plug hole. No oil sitting on top of the intake just down inside of it where the boot goes.

what would cause this?

This is a known problem on the older engines. Just quality issues but at the mileage you have, no dice.
The valve cover seal has given up.
Your long overdue for problems and maitainance.
Drive-em tll that get sick, then call the doctor.
