1990 F150 Bucking
1990 F150 Bucking
This is 3-year old problem and I won't quit till I fix it:
My 1990 Ford F150 (120k miles)began bucking intermittenly (not missing) like it was starved for fuel in the spring of 2001. Not all the time. Sometimes. I could go to work in the morning and it was fine. Return home at night and it was bucking. Or vice versa. Didn't matter if it was cold or warm out, although it seems more frequent when cold. When it is acting up, I can down shift (manual 5 speed), step on the gas and drive through it. If I drive long enough, or if I am driving on highway, the problem goes away and truck runs good.
After about 4 miles, check engine light comes on. This happens all the time whether it acts up or not. I checked the code - O2 sensor. Replaced it twice, but it did no good. Did tune up, fuel addtive, dry gas, cleaned throttle body, PCV valve. I checked wiring and vacuum hoses but I see nothing obvious.
I thought it could be fuel pressure, but it doesn't happen all the time. Many people tell me it is the EGR valve sticking, but I am not convinced. I just know someday, somewhere, some how, I will mention this problem to somebody and they will say: "That happened to me. Here's what you gotta do to fix it."

Fuel Filter
I had a truck with almost the same exact problem. I spent over 3500$ replacing parts on an 86 F150 until the problem was discovered. Try replacing all of the fuel filters. There should be three.
The sock in the tank, the pre high pressure pump filter and the after high pressure pump filter. THE ONE THAT IS MOST LIKELY TO BE IT IS THE ONE BEFORE THE HIGH PRESSURE PUMP. It ushally sits on the frame rail by the driverside door. It looks like a plastic dome that gets unscrewed. An oil filter wrench works the best.

yes it is the egr and egr pressure switch. i had a 92 that did it i changed everything you can think of more than once. finally took it to fords and found out what it was. here is the catch for 90 and up its a dealer part but a big but you can go to autozone and get the same parts for a 86 with a 351. i did it and found out the numbers where the same on both parts.
