Question Fuel Tank Problems

Help, I just got a 96 f150 with duel tanks, my truck starts fine when switched to rear tank, sometimes will start and run very rough on front tank or not at all on front, what really has me confused is if I start on rear then switch to front it will run fine. Any Ideas??? thanks MIKE

This is just speculation, but it sounds like the front fuel pump is not providing enough pressure to get the truck up and running, but it has just enough to keep it running. If you try to really get some performance out of it on the front tank, is it more sluggish than with the rear tank?

Well, I had that same problem with both of my fuel pumps on my 93 F-150. The signs that you are describing is the beginning of a fuel pump failure.

I agree, you'll want to check your fuel pressure. I'm not positive, but I think you should be running in the 40's psi range or maybe even a bit higher. There is a Schraeder valve on your fuel rail somewhere(it looks like a tire valve)that you attach a pressure gauge to. Any competent mech would have one, and shouldn't charge much to do it as it only takes a minute. As soon as you turn the key, it should indicate maximum psi.

Thanks for all your help, I was afraid it would be a pump problem in the front tank. GREAT SITE!!! I'm sure I'll be back again. Thanks again Mike.
