engine knock 5 L engine

Is there any remedy for this problem? I start the vehicle and the engine knocks and quiets down. sometimes the knock is very pronounced but always contstant. I have put in oil conditioners to stop knock. this helps some... any help or anyone who may be familiar with this engine would be greastly appreciated. Other than the knock this engine runs smooth.

Well, I don't claim to be a mechanic, but I do know engines can't be fixed with a can. It sounds like a piston slap problem if it goes away after warm up. If it was a rod knock you would hear it all the time.

From what I've read on this forum; people live with this quite often.

What type of oil filter are you using? I suggest using an oil filter with an anti-drain back valve if you are not allready. It looks like you have the 5.0, so it doesn't sound like you have piston slap. I believe piston slap evolved from the new overhead cam engines. I use Motorcraft filters, but anything with a valve would work.

5 L engine knock

I'll take your suggestion. The knock is constant less pronounced from time to time. Engine runs well and lots of torque. I know it is not a motorcraft... any way to know whether the filter has this valve?

The knock is there just not as loud all the time. if rod knock can I easily remove valve covers and adjust problem rocker/rod?

I was thinking more of the rod that goes from your piston to your main shaft, so no unfortunately; it wouldn't be a simple fix if that is in fact what it is. A rocker usually sounds more like a tick than a knock. Then again it could be a collapsed hydraulic valve. Hard to say without hearing it; do you know a decent mechanic in your area that could take a listen? Best of luck and I do hope you come back and let us know what you find out.

Lifters are filled with pressurized oil. The openings in the lifter or lifters can become plugged and then become compressed. The extra space between the lifter and the push rod causes a "knock" sound. As the oil warms up it becomes easier for it to get into the lifter and thus the noise becomes less pronounced. It is a mechanical problem. Have seen people used an engine treatment designed to remove varnish and sluge to try and free up the "sticky lifter" oil conditioners are not the same as the engine treatments. The engine treatments are almost like a solvent where as most oil treatments are designed to enhance viscosity. Good luck!!
