JMC,

speaking of practice, what kind of wear-n-tear does torque launching do to our tranny's? our trucks are designed to do some towing, etc., but when it comes to practicing, what internally is really being stressed that would/could eventually cause it to start failing?

oh, by the way, any thoughts on how much a 9100 and/or pullies would help in this showdown? i guess i'm just in the dark when it comes to knowing what kind of E.t.'s to expect with my current mod's and say with an addition of tuner/pulley.

Spidy,

Stock, you should be in the mid 17's. With the tuner, pulleys and your mods I would think you could break into the 16's.

I have a Super Chip along with a K & N drop in filter and JDM Electric fan kit. On the way home from the track a SB Reg Cab Hemi ran up on me real fast then slowed to 55 next to me. He reved at me so I reached down and turned my OD off. I guess he thought I stepped on the gas so he jumped on it then I did the same. He got a fender lead on me but by the time we hit 65 we were dead even and then by 75 I was pulling on him and by the time we hit 85 I had a fender on him, that is where I shut it down. He sounded like he had an exhuast but I don't know if he had any other mods. Anyway made me happy that my 99 Expy with 160+k miles was running that well.

IE. Steeper gearing! Whatever your gear ratio multiply it by your torque, so with a steeper gear, you are getting more torque to the ground! Dont fear the gear!

4.30 gears you figure would make a big enough difference?
This race against the hemi that i has my a$$ handed to me wasn't marked or anything, just a straight road up here and we went, i hate to say it, hah, i really do, but don't underestimate the hemi's power .

Gears will make a tremendous difference in how the truck launches. You have a choice of 4.10 or 4.56 gears. I
have yet to find a 4.30:1 for the 9.75.

Chris,

The occational run or three will not realy do any damage to the tranny but if you are going to do it on a regular basis then invest in an aux tranny cooler. A shift kit will also save the heat buildup by increasing the speed that gears change. And if you are worried about the testing/brake torquing just don't hold it for more than a few seconds at a time. After about 5 minutes you should know what rpm is best. Go in 500 rpm increments and when you have a range of about 500 narrow it down by 100 rpm increments. We are talking about a street race so it doesn't have to be that precise. The best place to do it would be at a track test and tune day.

Thats right, the 4.30's are for the 8.8 inch rear end. My bad. Be nice if they made them for the 9.75 though! Cant wait to do 5.13's in my 04! Think I can beat a hemi?

JMC,

I've got the tow package on my '02, so the tranny cooler is there. maybe it's in my head, or just the mileage on the truck (58k), but when i put 'er in gear, she doesn't snap forward as hard as before (w/o throttle that is). maybe its just time setting in.

sorry to bring this up again, but how much help would getting the 9100 and pullies be for this showdown? they obviously can't hurt, so maybe its rhetorical. the question is more "by how much" will they help? 1 sec?

Well that be nice, but hopefully by then I will be lifted 9" on 37's with either a 30 inch rim or a 22. So I will need that extra gearing! Plus I like a steep gear!

Bullit,

37 with 5.13s will give you the equivalent to 4.38s with your stock 265/70 R17s and 3.55s. Good choice for a hole shot or in the bush. You can always ease off the gas but if you don't have the gears no amount of gas will get the job done.

I'm at war with the hemi too. F150 supercrew 4X4 with stage 2 cold air, true dual exhaust, hypertech 3 programmer. i've got 315/70R17 tires that are the same as the hummer's on there, i lock up fine but they r big so i'm a little slow. What i'm researching now is a little nitrus(SP). I'm thinking a 100 dry shot with a 15lb tank in the bed. Not trying to go ricer on anyone, just seems for under a grand to increase 100hp and 100 foot pounds and not sacrifice fuel economy is hard to pass up. With the programmer i can adjust shift points ( idea of kicking out of first at about 35 and using the supercharger in the bottle in 2nd and shifting out of that around 90.) That should put the dodge overated hemi in its place. If u have the intake and exhaust GET THE PROGRAMMER. Your not getting the most out of the two without it. i got the thing just for adjust the speedo for the tires but would do it again in a heartbeat for the performance. Hypertech seems to b the best from what i've heard. I like mine a lot, so if ur close and can't take him, with the programmer u should b able to. Good luck everyone.

The hypertech on my 03 F150 was great! I would love to shoot some juice on my 04!

Well, looks like that race won't be happening anymore. Monday evening I pulled out of work, and not more than 30 seconds down the road, got hit head on by a drunk driver (in a '99 Maxima). Amazingly, by God's grace, all of us walked away unharmed. I'll find out today if State Farm will total her, but it will be the other guys insurance fielding the cost (Geico).

It's a shame, but it's only a vehicle. Thank you to everyone for all the help you have provided. Depending on the insurance outcome today, I may be in the market for a new truck Any suggestions?

Chris
