5.4 longevity

I want to get a 2001 or 02 Supercrew 4x4. I have come across a 2001 4x4 Supercrew XLT with the 5.4. THing is, it has 126700 miles on it.

Does anyone have any experience with this engine over 125k miles?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

That's a little high for an 01'. I'd look around a bit more to find something with no more than 70k on an 01'. Less would be even better. What kind of price is the seller asking? If the price is really low, say 12-14k, then it might be worth it and then put a new engine/trans in it when it needs it. Note: these engines will go hundreds of thousands of miles if taken care of properly. The key word being "properly".

They are asking 13,900 OBO. It also has a fiberglass tonneau cover.

if the body and interior is in good shape i'd jump on it. I pulled my 5.4 out of my 99 with a bad head. it had 118,00 HARD miles on it and the rest of the engine looked great. i could have put a new head on it and rolled another hundred thousand no prob.

Well then, I'd definitely take a look at the thread named "Who is in the 100,000 mile club?", as Wayne suggested in the post above. There are 305 post's so you may need some time when you go to review them.

Hey Rob,

Small world. I live in Griffith also. You looked at buying my last house, but as I recall your jeep would not fit through the garage door.

I come to this board pretty often. I have a 97 F-150 4.6 with almost 270,000 miles. It is all original except for maintenance items, bearings in the alternator and differential, and u-joints. These trucks seem to be well built to me. IMO the 4.6 is a little more reliable than the 5.4, but the 5.4 is a very good engine. There are lots of 5.4's with over 100,000 miles. I'm not sure about the price, but it should be very good if you decide you want it. Go to KBB.com to see what it is worth with those miles. Make sure you like the truck, because it will be hard to sell with 150,000 or 200,000 miles.

Good Luck

99 5.4 Expy with 170k miles. Could not be happier. Only maint to engine has been 2 coil packs that I screwed up when cleaning the motor. Then I changed all 8 just because I figured 150k or so miles was enough on the coil packs.

4.6 question

So is the 4.6 a totally inadequate vehicle in the 4x4 and possibly towing no more than a 3k travel trailer?

ROB,

Lets just say that you will know that the trailer is behind you. The stock 4.6 only makes about 290-293 lbs/ft of torque. The 5.4 makes 335-350 lbs/ft. That in its self is not a huge difference but the 5.4 makes the torque at a lower rpm. That is what makes the noticable difference between the two motors. The 5.4 has more torque sooner than the 4.6.
